Michelle Obama In Hot Water Over Racial Slur
Mad World News ^ | JUNE 26, 2014 | AMANDA SHEA

Posted on 06/26/2014 7:56:38 PM PDT by kingattax

It seems as though the racist accusations have turned on First Lady Michelle Obama after she made a grammar gaffe on Monday while speaking about part-time job salaries. Unlike when she inappropriately slanders someone or something for being racist, in her recent offending comments she was in fact acting the part.

The First Lady used the word “gypped” while describing the earnings for part-time jobs, with specific regard to when she herself was a working mother as an ABC news reporter at the White House Summit on Working Families. The remark is now drawing some criticism from media outlets for the racial slur.

After everything she’s done, this is what she’s in “hot water” for? That’s a common phrase that I’ve heard throughout my over five decades.

“Gypped” is a word I and most I knew used now and then as kids and young adults and we had no idea where the word came from. It just meant cheated to us.

But Moochelle and most adults now should well know where it comes from in these PC times.

None, because Irish have LIVES.

Gypped is supposed to be derived from Gypsy. Today, that’s considered racist against Gypsies or as they are otherwise known the Roma. As another poster indicated, it is akin to saying someone “jewed you down.”

how many gypsies are there left to offend? gypsies aren’t just one race of people. they came from a bunch of different countries and peoples. and for the large part they earned that reputation.

if she had said jewed, that’d be a different story.

““gypped” comes from “gypsy” which comes from “egyptian”.”

A derogatory term for an Egyptian is “gyppo” and is probably as much a contraction of “Egyptian” as a reference to the endemic/inherent dishonest shown by ‘gyppo’/Muslim to the non-Muslim.

If it’s Roma, it’s accurate. These people claim gypping and stealing from others as a way of life. If they don’t like the derivation, then I don’t feel gypped.

“The term “gypped” is derived from the word “gypsy,” which refers to the Romani people. It’s used to describe one who swindles or cheats someone and has many negative connotations.”

I’m with you - I’ve used the word all my life. I’m certainly no fan of Michelle, but she’s given us more than enough ammo to go after her in many other areas. I give her a pass on this one...and I’m with her too, I’m no fan of Gypsies either.

Now if she had used the term “Jewed”, that would be different in my book...as it points much stronger towards a specific group of people and is not an everyday word, at least for most people.

I am most encouraged that, while there is disquiet some persons have over the First Lady, she has her defenders here. The biggest laugh about the term Gypsies is from England. The politically correct brigade, decided the word was insulting. They instituted the word "travellers" to designate parasitical wanderers who camped on public parks. The actual Romany descendants objected to the designation "traveller" applied to them.

The joker was that only 5000 to 7000 real Romany exist in England today. The other 90,000 are persons in caravans and campers who never work. They settle on nice parks and leave filth and debris and move on. They get funds from the government, as do the indigent in the city.

The old traditional Gypsies of George Henry Borrow's biographies, like the name Gypsy. They would prefer Romany though.

I got my first job the day I turned 16, in a little luncheonette. I was a dishwasher, but soon I was asked to help deliver food, and then I was helping behind the counter and using the cash register. My next job was at what my mom called “the five and dime” — I stocked shelves, swept the isles and when we were busy, or near closing time, I ran the register. That experience got me a full time office job, and I worked a lot of hours beyond original expectations. But I learned and learned and learned. And I grew and grew an grew.

The article is missing the point in talking about the origin of the word... the issue is that she was given an opportunity that required her to work hard.

Hard work pays off for most us, it's what we teach our children, isn't it? Not in the White House I guess, there they view this story of life as being gypped, that working above and beyond is a rip off? Geeze...

I don't agree. Gypped always meant cheated. The travelers had the reputation of offering a service, but shortchanged you by trickery. Jewed down meant you lost in a bartering session; no cheating, just raw negotiating.

They came from India about a thousand years ago (proof from DNA testing etc), and went to various European countries. They are also one of two groups Hitler wanted to completely eliminate. They like the Jews, are still despised in Europe.
