Syrian rebels and Al-Qaida launched a counter-offensive Saturday to expel the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) from Albu Kamal town on the Iraq border, a monitor said.

The operation came just days after some fighters from Al-Qaida's Syria franchise, Al-Nusra Front, pledged loyalty to ISIL in Albu Kamal, after it led an offensive in Iraq and seized chunks of territory

But not all Al-Nusra fighters defected and those who refused to submit to the jihadist group joined forces with other Syrian rebel groups to launch the counter-offensive.

"Fighting has raged since late last night in Albu Kamal between Al-Nusra Front and Islamist rebels on one side and ISIL on the other," said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Eventually, perhaps years from now, these are the people that will control the new Sunni dominated nation stretching from the Mediterranean to just north of Baghdad comprising the Tigress Euphrates valleys.

The moderates have the numbers and the imported radicals will have all gone home

I absolutely agree.

And, I never believed the “Oh, ISIS/ISIL is so bad that even Al Qaeda rejects them.” (same tact)

If there’s any dispute it’s all about a power struggle, who gets the biggest cut of war booty, and who gets first dibs on rape.
