A year after the United States Senate passed comprehensive immigration legislation, a leading Democratic advocate for reform says efforts to get similar laws passed in the House of Representatives have failed and he is giving up.
Debate on the issue now focuses on a surge of unaccompanied children from Central America coming into the United States, with lawmakers from both parties blaming each other for the crisis.
Democratic Representative Luis Gutierrez has been trying for months to get House Republicans to sit down with Democrats to agree on immigration reform legislation. Republicans say they cannot trust President Barack Obama to enforce current laws, however, and have not allowed a vote.
Gutierrez this week took to the House floor, and said he is giving Republicans a red card.
"First of all your chance to play a role in how immigration and deportation policies are carried out this year is over. Having been given ample time and space to craft legislation, you failed, he said.
Unlikely passage
Many analysts say there is little chance of immigration reform getting through this year.

We're at the end of June now and STILL no immigration bill on the floor. One month at a time till January 3rd and then this congress is through and they have to start all over again.
Nobody will be more pissed than Chuck Schumer and John McCain. Good!
Immigration reform is all about amnesty, all the time. You never see a reform proposal without amnesty as a provision.
Hey, Luis, how about enforce the current laws. Why pass new laws, when you don't enforce current law? You're a phony, lying sack of manure, Luis and a wannabe Stalinist. IOW, you're a disgrace.
Secure the border and enforce current immigration law.
What is there problem with that?
Their problem is that destroying America from the inside requires chaos and collapse.
Border states are going to have to muster and address this INVASION.
The ballot box every two or four years is NOT the solution any more.
INVASION of hoardes of impoverished socialists is the beginning of the more militant phase of the scheme.
So far, we haven’t even brought a fork to the battle.
- Build a 30 foot wall completely on the Mexican border. Add underground sensors. Place U.S. military to man the posts where every square yard of the wall complex is covedred.
-Deport every illegal alien. Send them back to their home country.
-De-emphasize bringing aliens from poor, impoverished countries like Mexico and Central America. Revive bringing in immigrants from Europe and Africa who are fleeing anti-Christian persecution. These people will be very patriotic towards America, and bring a work and spiritual ethic to our country we so desperately need.
If by "immigration reform" (amnesty) legislation advocates, including the bogus POTUS,what made them think an invasion of our southern border would enhance its chances of passage?
With past illegal invaders, all their anchor babies and chain migration, we’ve lost the war. This current mess is just another battle that we will also lose.
By aiding and abetting this child army of invaders and squatters the 0bunghole regime/Democrats have proven they are never to be trusted on any kind of immigration reform...whether they call it amnesty or not!
Lawless traitorous Democrats are bringing in a new electorate to displace-replace the native born Americans who vote too conservative to their liking
Works for me.
There is another candidate for the great “Despite ...” headlines.
