The assault lasted nearly an hour. The terrorists used a Russian tank. The shelling was conducted from the tank gun, small arms and under barrel grenade launchers. According to Censor.NET, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko stated in an interview with CNN:

Artyomovsk is the largest Soviet-era Tank Depot in Europe, if not the world. How many actually run is anybody’s guess.
Like the mines at Slovyansk, it was supposed to be a rally area for several Second and Third-tier Armored Divisions if the balloon ever went up.

That simply is not true, and it is one of the major reasons that the Ukrainian Army has performed so poorly. The conscripts are told this, then when they get to the Souheast, they find it is actual Ukrainians they are fighting, not Russians.
There are plenty of Russian Citizens involved with the rebellion, but there are thousands of locals, as well.
Perhaps, a friend shared this info which can help clarify this statement: “ The Ukraine, like all former Soviet occupied territories, have a certain number of Russians and/or Communists who remained as agents of the KGB/FSB or at least sympathize with the restoration of the Soviet empire. These agents and sleeper agents infest all branches and levels of government, including in many of the NATO member states (Germany for example) who were former subjects of the Soviet Union. They and the just plain criminals facilitate the corruption and incompetence of their respective government and commercial organizations. Changing the heads of the departments can improve some of the circumstances, but cannot for a long time to come discover and remove the bad actors and make them ineffectual.”
