Getting fired over something like this is overkill.

Be sure to make the company policies more reasonable when you start your restaurant chain.

I was, too-it was sinful because in Africa, people starved every day-we should be grateful to have food to eat. I grew up on a ranch-you didn’t take a helping of something at the table unless you were going to eat it-otherwise you got lectured if it went into the bucket with the chicken feed. Being Hispanic, we didn’t do Easter eggs, but cascarones, and the raw contents of the punctured shells were whipped up and served as scrambled eggs the next morning for breakfast, like it or not-no wasted...

Those are the times he was caught.

Worked retail a long time, and when “they” do this kind of stuff, by the time you are ready to have a case to prosecute or terminate them it is hundreds if not thousands of dollars.

I had one guy breakdown and ultimately admit to $15000.00 in mdse. theft! Funny thing was, he was the suspect, nor did we have him on tape of any kind.

Social media works both ways. When the easily flummoxed Cracker Barrel pulled all of their Duck Dynasty merchandise off the shelves because Uncle Phil took a slap at gays, our side went into boycott mode. CB hastily put all the stuff back. Maybe Cracker Barrel needs to get their PR act together. They could also afford to start serving good food, but that’s my opinion.

I think in our family it was China but I can’t remember. We never thought to do something useful with the eggs. We just waited for the Easter bunny to deliver the chocolate.

>> If he was so moved

I guess Cracker Barrel was neither so moved to ask for reimbursement and request it not happen again. And yes, it’s not out of the ordinary to permit some latitude in the service industry.

Firing people over a paper clip? This is not my conservatism.

Very few corporations are conservative, but most of them have a no tolerance policy on theft, and I can understand why. What are they supposed to do, create a chart listing appropriate punishments for varying levels of theft? How would they do that, by cost per theft, cumulative over various time periods, by item, say, a particular punishment tied to the theft of each individual item on the menu? It makes more sense to say If it ain't yours, don't take it.

By the way, I do believe Thou Shalt Not Steal to be a conservative principle.

Cracker Barrel can set their policies as they see fit but they made a huge PR blunder by handling it this way. If they quietly took this employee aside and reprimanded him, it would likely never happen again and none of this would be going viral.

In every job I have ever held, it is a firing offense to take so much as a paper clip.

I take that back. I once worked for an egg distributor who allowed us to eat eggs on the premises.

No matter the opinion you espouse, Cracker Barrel has been something of a PR disaster anyway, and this muffin-and-mayo doesn’t help. Maybe they need to consider getting rid of some of the PR staff instead of a guy giving muffins to beggars?

I’ve worked in corporations most of my adult life. No one ever got punished, much less fired, for taking a paper clip. I did not mean to imply that corporations are “conservative.” I meant to say that this type of conservatism as expressed here at FR is waaaay too hardline for me.

That didn't work. This wasn't his first offense.

What, agreeing with a company firing an habitual thief?

Well if he was reprimanded before for doing the same thing than he should be fired. But Cracker Barrel should have done a better job getting in front of this one. Their PR department is asleep at the switch. Most major corporations have a “social media” department that monitors the Internet 24/7 and instantly responds to anything that might do harm to the company’s reputation.
