Republican Cochran wins with Dems, should Alabama close its primary to avoid it happening here?

Sen. Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) overcame tea party-backed challenger Chris McDaniel in a runoff Tuesday night after finishing second behind him in the primary three weeks ago. Although he now faces a Democrat in November, Cochran’s runoff victory likely secures him a whopping seventh term in the U.S. Senate.

Alabamians were paying unusually close attention to the out-of-state race because of its potential impact on the committee assignments of one of our own U.S. senators, Richard Shelby.

With all of the action in Republican primaries now, the teachers’ union and liberal activists launched a coordinated effort to get traditionally Democratic voting blocs to the polls to vote not for Democrats, but for their chosen Republicans.

In most races they were unsuccessful, but they were able to pick up a couple of state house seats.

Alabama Republican Party Chairman Bill Armistead has already vocally backed party registration.

I am not associated with any party; I am an Independent. I’m glad Alabama doesn’t force me to only vote in one party’s primary.

Having said that, I’ve only voted for a democrat once in my long life; that was Jimmy Carter, and I did it because I hated Ford; being a Reagan man in the primary that year, 1976.

Since then, I have never asked for a democrat ballot. One reason is, upon my death, I pretty much will only be voting democrat.

Seriously, I’m not sure. If the GOP gets more and more RINO, it may be the only way to stop that drift.

I think runoffs are bad news anyway. Its just compounded by having them wide open.

I’m starting to really appreciate closed primaries.

I’m starting to really appreciate closed primaries.

I have adamantly opposed open primaries from the get-go. Political parties are formed by like-minded people who band together in order to promote their agreed-upon beliefs and principles. Open primaries undermine this concept.

“Cochran’s runoff victory likely secures him a whopping seventh term in the U.S. Senate.”

Eh, we’ll see about that.

Let me borrow a phrase: VOTE FOR THE DEM, IT’S IMPORTANT.

Defeating Thad Cochran may be the most important thing that can happen this November.

The open primary isn’t the problem in Mississippi. The problem is in opening the runoff election to voters who didn’t vote in the primary. Close that loophole like we do here in Georgia, and you won’t have this problem.

I agree, I don’t know why any party would want to have an open primary. what’s the point?

Now, a jungle primary, like they have in LA and now (I think) in CA, that makes some sense.

In those, if anyone doesn’t know, everyone runs and the top 2 vote getters face-off in the general.

Nineteen states have open primaries and a couple more with some variation.

All primary elections should be closed.

Democrats and other lefties create enough underhanded trouble without having the ability to screw up republican voters choice of whom they want as a candidate.

Ah, somebody else trying to encourage FReepers to vote Dem. Who the heck is paying these people?

I don’t mean you, since I’ve seen your posts before, but somebody has got to be paying concern trolls to come out and tell conservatives that their only real home is in the Democrat party and that they’ll really be getting back at the GOPe by voting Dem.

But the only people they will hurt will be themselves, because then they’ll have no leverage whatsoever.

BTW, this ain’t your daddy’s Dem party. There aren’t anymore blue dog Dems in the South or anywhere else.

I agree, open primaries are an invitation to dirty tricks.

The Cochran campaign would have come up with something dirty and ugly anyway, but without the 35,000 Dem voters, they would have had nowhere the same chance of succeeding.

Be interesting to try that just once in TX and see what happens, the Jungle Primary. Seems almost like parliamentary conduct.

Not only Alabama but all open primary states should close them.

Any state with an open primary deserves the kind of results that McDaniel got.

Suppose Cochran had made his pitch to Democrats in the primary and had won with 50.1 percent of the vote, aided by thousands of Democrat voters. You would be OK with that?

Well, 6 years ago Rush had us voting for Hillary or Obama depending on who was ahead... In that case we were the spoilers, as we (I mean Rush listeners) were NEVER going to vote for either of them come that November.

But I can see the reason to close off the Republican primary to only conservatives, let alone democrats. No RINOs, either.
