Thousands go without water as Detroit cuts service for nonpayment
LA Times ^ | 28 June 14 | Alana Semuels

Nicole Hill holds up her past-due water bill at her home in Detroit. Her water has been off for about six weeks.

It has been six weeks since the city turned off Nicole Hill's water.

Dirty dishes are piled in the sink of her crowded kitchen, where the yellow-and-green linoleum floor is soiled and sticky. A small garbage can is filled with water from a neighbor, while a bigger one sits outside in the yard, where she hopes it will collect some rain. She's developed an intricate recycling system of washing the dishes, cleaning the floor and flushing the toilet with the same water.

"It's frightening, because you think this is something that only happens somewhere like Africa," said Hill, a single mother who is studying homeland security at a local college. "But now I know what they're going through — when I get somewhere there's a water faucet, I drink until my stomach hurts."

Hill is one of thousands of residents in Detroit who have had their water and sewer services turned off as part of a crackdown on customers who are behind on their bills. In April, the city set a target of cutting service to 3,000 customers a week who were more than $150 behind on their bills. In May, the water department sent out 46,000 warnings and cut off service to 4,531. The city says that cutting off water is the only way to get people to pay their bills as Detroit tries to emerge from bankruptcy — the utility is currently owed $90 million from customers, and nearly half the city's 300,000 or so accounts are past due.

Yeah but if you read the article, and taking what is said as true, there is something seriously wrong with this woman’s bill. She said she was getting bills for $200 a month for water, that she’s lived there 5 years and she owes almost $6,000. My water bill is about $25 a month. Something is wrong there.

And I love the picture of the smirking white guy. It’s him and other white liberals like him who empowered the black racists to ruin Detroit and the lives of its residents.

GOOD JOB ALL!

“...bring manufacturing back.”

I wish someone would study how environmental wacko-ism helped to destroy manufacturing in this country.

I don’t know this to be true (hence the need for study) but I expect that it is.

Maybe if she’d spent a little more time in school learning how to write and converse (not conversate) she’d have been equipped enough to deal with that problem. The problem is that she very very likely has EVERY one of her other basic needs covered by entitlements and she didn’t give one crap about her ‘bill’ (what’s that?) until she lost her water. It’s all about MENTALITY - not an actual problem that could have been resolved years ago had she actually cared.

What did she care? She has her tattoos, he hair did and her nails, didn’t she?

The only answer is inner city jobs...bring manufacturing back. Then people will have paychecks instead of freebies.

I agree 100% but the city itself is largely responsible for killing small business. Big guys are actually thriving and growing in Detroit because they can afford regulatory and tax costs while the little guy can't.

As far as bringing manufacturing back, I think that is actually happening but it's hindered by the border bottleneck there. Once the new bridge is built it will free things up considerably.

I see Nicole can afford tattoos, manicures and lots of food. Perhaps her priorities are a bit off.

This is a Georgia woman IIRC. She was too stupid the photographer and reporter were making sure her ‘complete’ story was told. LOL

She can’t pay her water bill but I bet she paid cash for the tattoos & hair stylin.
Prospective homeland security (risk) employee?

No, it’ll get much worse before it gets better if it ever does. And now we have this permanent underclass like untouchables in India. And, yes, it was Democratic policies that destroyed Detroit. Read the book “Miriam’s Kitchen,” about the Jewish flight from Detroit in the 60s. A great city brought low.

You could post that photo on any thread, and my first guess would still be Detroit.

""When there is genuine inability to pay, human rights simply forbids disconnections," Catarina de Albuquerque, the [United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights]'s expert on the human right to water and sanitation"

Then why don't you take up a collection of your fellow liberals and pay their bills for them out of your own pockets? I mean, if you really cared about them, you would.

you think this is something that only happens somewhere like Africa

But that's what you have voted for year after year, after year. You have voted for the Robert Mugabe types, and they have driven your fair city into the ground. You're suprised that they don't have a pot to piss in let alone a window to throw it out of.

So, just where do you think that, that treated water comes from and what does it cost to provide it. It isn't free, and yet in keeping with your Free Shit Army mentality, you expect someone other than yourself to bear those costs. And, how many kids to you have again?
