Video Shows Officer Forcing Professor To Ground After Being Stopped For Jaywalking [LV]

TEMPE, Ariz. (CBS Las Vegas) - An Arizona State University English professor is claiming self-defense against a campus police officer who slammed her to the front of a police car last month.

Dr. Ersula Ore was walking near campus when she was stopped by an officer while crossing College Avenue near Fifth Street.

“The reason I’m talking to you right now is because you are walking in the middle of the street,” Officer Stewart Ferrin said in a video recording obtained by KTVK. “Let me see your ID or you will be arrested for failing to provide ID.”

“Are you serious?” Ore asked.

“Yes, I am serious. That is the law,” Ferrin replied.

The professor stated that she was trying to cross College Avenue like several other people around her in an attempt to avoid construction, a police report explained.

“I never once saw a single solitary individual get pulled over by a cop for walking across a street on a campus, in a campus location. Everybody has been doing this because it is all obstructed. That’s the reason why,” Ore told the officer. “But you stop me in the middle of the street to pull me over and ask me, ‘Do you know what this is? This is a street.’ ”

Ferrin asked her if she knew that it was street. Before Ore could finish her statement, he demanded that she put her hands behind her back.

“Don’t touch me,” Ore said. “Get your hands off me.”

The officer demanded for her to comply again.

“Put your hand behind your back. I’m going to slam you on this car. Put your hand behind your back,” Ferrin stated.

“You really want to do that? Do you see what I’m wearing? Do you see?” Ore said.

At the time of the incident the professor was wearing a black dress. The police officer “slammed” her onto the car and she was then wrestled to the ground where her dress rose exposing her body.

Ferrin and Ore suffered minor injuries and she was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, criminal damage and obstructing a thoroughfare.

The video shows Ore also kicking Ferrin while he was arresting her.

Ore plans to fight the charges and her attorney, Alane Roby, explained that she responded in self-defense.

“She was exposed, told officer she was exposed,” Roby stated of Ore to KTVK. “Her dress was up; the officer was reaching toward her anatomy. She felt uncomfortable with hands going there.”

The university released a statement to KTVK explaining that “ASU authorities have reviewed the circumstances surrounding the arrest and have found no evidence of inappropriate actions by the ASUPD officers involved. Should such evidence be discovered, an additional, thorough inquiry will be conducted and appropriate actions taken.

“Because the underlying criminal charges are pending, there is not much more we can say at this time. The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office has reviewed all available evidence, including the police report, witness statements, and audio and video recordings of the incident, and decided to press criminal charges of assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, refusing to provide identification when requested to do so by an officer, and obstructing a highway or public thoroughfare.”

Cop should be tarred and feathered. Clearly has no skills in deescalating a situation. Eventual lawsuit magnet in the millions.

Woman needs to learn how deescalate a situation too. Only difference, is the cop is supposed to be the adult.

Campus cops.

(hocc ptui)

Last December, here in San Antonio, the last words an unarmed university student ever spoke was “What? Are you gonna shoot me?”

Then BANG! BANG! BANG!

The kid was dead. Shot because he dared to backtalk a campus cop.

Arrogant @hole A with a gun, meet arrogant @hole B with an advanced degree.
Both presume themselves to be in control of the situation.
Wonder which one wins? I’m hoping for B, if anything due to the fact that obeying the specific law was at question due to construction, and there were numerous others doing the very same thing at that moment who were not accosted and arrested.

The Supreme Court has held that is it NOT against the law to provide police officers with ID no matter what the cop says.

Arizona has no statute requiring ID be provided. Only your name.

I don’t know who I hate more, overbearing cops or university professors with a smug sense of entitlement. I do know if a cop asks me for an ID and I refuse bad things will follow. If I’m cooperative the worst that will probably happen is a ticket, which I can fight in court later.

Accusing the officer of "disrespectful" talk Red Flag #2

ASU Review of ALL the facts recommends the charges against her stand. Red Flag #3

As usual the facts will come out several days after the emotional video bite. This is the next treyvon martin.

ENG 602: Critical Race Theory (CRT)
Lee Bebout and Ersula Ore

In this course we will examine the social construction of race and its effects as they pertain to dynamics of race and power in American society. Course readings will originate from a variety of fields, including history, law, cultural studies, literature, and rhetoric. This class is guaranteed to be engaging as well as challenging. We will work through the oft difficult, fraught and ‘unsaid’ aspects of race, justice, and American culture. Readings will include work by George Lipsitz, Krista Ratcliff, Joel Olson, Eduardo Bonilla-Silva, Richard Delgado, and Michelle Alexander among others. While our focus will be on U.S race dynamics, we welcome students in other areas to add to the conversation.

If the cop had stopped a jay walking illegal and asked for ID I am sure the cop would have been fired before the end of the day...

Illegals seem to be a protected class these days while American citizens are seen as an obstacle to power by the ruling class, while illegals are seen as a gateway to power.

Let’s assume the cop was going to write her a ticket for jaywalking. First rule, never argue with the cop at the scene. Take the ticket and fight it in court. There’s a good chance the cop won’t show and it will be dismissed, or that the judge will accept your explanation and drop it. OTOH, if you piss the cop off, he will remember you, make sure to show up, and possibly lie about what happened. But if you don’t show your ID, the cop can’t just issue you a citation, because you could be giving him a fake name. So he either has to back down completely, or detain you.

Did you watch the video or did you just rely on the story in order to come to the conclusion that she was civil? It is clear from the video that she refused to comply with the officer’s request and had an attitude from the very beginning. It is also possible that she was inebriated since the ASU bar scene is just around the corner from there.

Somehow I think if she provides ID and some sort of ID showing she is a professor at the School.... the whole thing likely goes away.

Do cops and wanna be cops have attitudes. Yep. Do professors of "cultural studies"... yep

She's also an idiot. Fighting with a cop because you don't want to produce an ID is just plain stupid. You may win in an appellant court somewhere.... but you're probably gonna end up with your dress over your head at some point :)

Campus Cops are AZPOST-qualified. Doesn’t mean there aren’t bad apples in the bunch, but they’re trained to be professionals.

AZ State professors are some the most arrogant people alive. It has been a daily occurence for faculty to call the ASUPD for access to their class-rooms because the faculty couldn’t be bothered to carry their keys with them. And they didn’t call the station, they called 9-1-1.

Hm, I'm not sure about this — there are cases where the police are completely unjustified.
Would it be a bad idea to refuse to show ID if the police showed up to your property due to complaints about you having a gun w/o warrant?
