Both parents of a toddler who died in an unattended SUV in suburban Atlanta told investigators they did online research on how hot it needs to be for a child to die in an unattended vehicle, police said.

Justin Ross Harris, 33, faces murder charges in the death of his son, 22-month-old Cooper on June 18. While he had previously allegedly admitted to researching the subject, investigators now say Leanna Harris also went on line to learn about kids dying in hot cars. She has not been charged, but the revelation came on a search warrant released Sunday, which said she claimed she researched the subject because she was afraid it could happen.

Police say Cooper died after being left in the backseat of an SUV.

Were they going for the “Oh I left junior in the car” sympathy crowd to raise money for his college fund???

“How many minutes they could get away with before the kid died?”

Yes, that’s what I was wondering. You can’t leave a kid (or a pet) in a car, you just can’t do it. Not to run into the store for 2 minutes or for any amount of time.

If these people, or this man, intentionally killed their child this way, well I just don’t know what to say about that.

how much would a homo couple pay for a blond baby like that? Unless they're still on the Chinese baby trip, I would think an "Aryan" model, like fellow homo John Roberts has, would still be a big deal...

Instead, they kill the kid. Unbelievable.

The best way to prevent such a tragedy is to always place your handbag if you’re a woman, on the back seat, or your briefcase on the back seat if you’re a man.

If you never carry a handbag or briefcase, then put a bright red ribbon or a couple of bright red rubber bands on your wrist.

Searched the web to determine how deaths occur in an unattended car in hot weather. Depends on when they did this; before or after the event. Even if it was done before depends on what information the parents got. If the parents has had previous reports of abuse is one thing .

But watch out for ambitious prosecuters and presummtive reporters. They might have had the ac on long before and the car was cool when they went into where ever they were and tarried too long. This might just be a case of bad judgement that ended in tragedy

How in the hell could you not remember your child is strapped in the backseat of your car? He stopped for breakfast, apparently for both he and his son; less than a mile later, he arrives at work. Lunch time - he goes out to the car and puts something in through the driver’s side - STILL doesn’t notice his son in the back seat, probably unconscious by now. At 4:00 pm he returns to the car to leave work, drives to a shopping mall, and SUDDENLY remembers the baby in the back seat. WHAT’S WRONG WITH HIS HEAD? Were he and his wife in the habit of doing this a lot? They must have been, since they RESEARCHED it, because they said they “WERE AFRAID IT WOULD HAPPEN”. OBVIOUSLY, THEY WERE IN THE HABIT OF DOING THIS, knew they were wrong and risking their child’s life, BUT CONTINUED TO DO IT ANYWAY????? HANG THEM BOTH!

Regarding the lunchtime visit to the car - the poor child had probably relieved himself, and in a hot car, that would stink to high heaven. The father didn’t notice a bad odor in the car during this visit? If not then, he definitely should have noted a bad odor when he got in the car at the end of the day and reported to the authorities then and there.

I don’t think a jury is going to buy his story at all.

RIP Cooper.

They could have just dropped the kid off at a police or fire station.

Yes, but I'm sure they were afraid they would "look bad" if they did that. I'm serious.

They should do a paternity test to see if the man is the actual father.

I'm not buying that, either.
Georgia is almost as hot as Florida.
Believe it or not, lots of us drive cars without working AC, and even if your AC works, it's impossible to attempt to drive without cooling the car first, by opening the windows or doors long enough for the heat to escape, or the AC to kick in.

Looks like mommy just admitted she conspired with daddy to murder the baby. And yes, often evil, murderous people are exactly that stupid. Which is why they are most often caught.

Did they have a large life insurance policy on the poor baby?

This case just reeks, and your very plain spoken description of just how much it physically reeks pretty much negates the “tragic accident” aspect.

Both parents probably wanted this child gone and looked for the “Easiest” method..no way was this an accident..poor little boy, he was absolutely adorable. How any parent could leave a child in a hot car to rot disgusts me

Sort of like being all worried about drowning, and doing research on the best type of life jacket to get for your child (height, weight, materials, etc.) And of course once you buy it, you make sure you get all the straps and things fitting right the night before the big outing. But as soon as the kid is out on the boat “Oh - he doesn’t need a life jacket.”

“How in the hell could you not remember your child is strapped in the backseat of your car?”

I remember years ago with a 3 year-old and infant twins and being sleep deprived (helping my wife with everything and trying to work from home). A few times I would take her car for something, glance in the rear-view mirror and see the two empty car seats and go “Oh my God! I left the girls at the....Oh. Wait. They are at home. Whew!” (I did leave the grocery store TWICE and left a cart full of stuff after paying late at night.)

But as sleep deprived, scatter-brained and busy as I was; I NEVER left one in the car.

I wondered if the stupid couple tried to skip on daycare costs and considered leaving the child in the car for a few hours here and there.

That sounds like a very plausible explanation. It leads me to wonder if the parents left their little boy in the car at other times, and when he seemed to be OK, they believed they could get away with doing that more often. (?)
