50 years of landmark Civil Rights Act reshaped U.S.; Time to pay its slave debt

'Reparations are long overdue'

Ed Dorn, 69, dates back to the Class of ’64. He is a member of the last generation of African Americans to have completed their entire primary and secondary education in segregated schools.

He graduated from his Houston high school just before the Civil Rights Act of 1964 gave him and the U.S. an entirely new future.

So when he headed to the University of Texas it was his first experience of integration. Blacks may have numbered only about 300 in a student body of 25,000 whites, but that didn’t matter. A new world beckoned.

“I didn’t experience concrete changes,” Dorn recalled in an interview. “What I experienced was more a kind of psychological change. The civil rights act settled one huge ambiguity and that had to do with the status of African Americans in the U.S. For the first time the federal government said, yes, African Americans are to be considered full-fledged citizens of the United States.”

Until that moment, he had lived inside a black community whose limits were dictated by an array of so-called Jim Crow laws that, since the Civil War, racist state and local governments had imposed with viselike effects.

“You grew up in an environment where things just happened as a matter of course,” he said. “These are the schools you are supposed to attend and, to a lesser extent, these are the ambitions you are expected to have. These are the things you can do. You might expect to go to college but certain professions may be closed off to you.”(continued)

The president that pushed through the Civil Rights Act of 1964, with the help of Republicans, is the same president that ensured that the welfare state would do what the Jim Crow Laws could no longer do...................

Let’s remember that Democrats were at the center of the establishment of Jim Crow laws and never let the discussion of reparations pass without throwing that on the table.

I approve of slavery reparations in the following amounts:

$10,000,000 tax free for each and every individual who was held in slavery in this country while slavery was legal.

$5,000,000 tax free for every individual who has at least one biological parent who was held in slavery in this country while slavery was legal.

Everyone else needs to get a job and STFU.

PS - Individuals must still be among the living and must be able to prove their status in order to collect reparations.

We ALREADY paid our “slave debt” IN RIVERS OF BLOOD over 150 years ago.

Not a damn thing more from me.

They have sold themselves back into the slavery of the Democrat party for EBT cards. They can suck it.

I think Whitey has more than paid reparations to the descendants of slavery through decades of welfare & subsidies to the point education, family & achievement have been lost.

We even freed Sheila Jackson Lee!

I’m all in favor of making the Democrats pay reparations for what they did.

Give them a once-per-lifetime choice:

1. No reparations and welfare.

2. Reparations and no welfare.

One or the other. Not both.

Unfortunately courts will simply overturn it and give them both

If there is one organization that owes reparations in America, it is the Democratic Party. No other organization has benefited from slavery and the oppression of blacks more than the Dems. No other organization has done more to terrorize blacks (by forming and protecting the KKK) and oppress them through legal means like Jim Crow laws. Let’s see the Dem Party pay $100 million a year to blacks. Then we can talk about everyone else doing so.

To Hell with "reparations", and to Hell with welfare.

We must quit pillaging the Productive Class to support a Parasite Class. Let the obese thieves of the Parasite Class do something useful for a living, or starve. They're destroying America.

A fine black wine is poured. I think the blacks should pay reparations to America for fighting a bloody Civil War to free them from slavery.

Yes plenty of comments!
“Until that moment, he had lived inside a black community whose limits were dictated by an array of so-called Jim Crow laws that, since the Civil War, racist state and local governments had imposed with viselike effects.”

Today most blacks still live inside a black community. Why?
Today most blacks vote in bloc for the Democrat Party. You know the Party that started the KKK. The party that did not vote for desegragation. The party that still treats them as if they can not make it on their own. So WHY???
As to reparations you can stick that where the sun won’t hit it... None of my family was muslim pirates or black in Africa that captured and sold blacks to the dutch and others. None of my family going back as many generations as we were able to trace ever owned a slave, bought a slave sold a slave etc. We did have one relative fight and get wounded in the Civil War. So no. You are not handing out any of my tax dollars to anyone that has been voting for the very people that hold them back for the past 150 years. That has nothing to do with me.......

The only “reparations” that should be offered should be vouchers for one-way flights to Liberia. The vouchers will be redeemed at the Amerian Embassy when the recipient renounces his American citzenship, fills out the forms and surrenders his American passport.
