California legislators look to change campus 'rape culture'

As colleges continue to grapple with the increasingly public issue of campus sexual violence, California lawmakers are weighing how to address a "rape culture" that some say has been overly tolerated by the state's public universities.

During a joint oversight hearing Monday afternoon, members of the Assembly Higher Education and Joint Legislative Audit committees questioned whether schools in the University of California and California State University systems need harsher punishments for perpetrators and greater legislative oversight to ensure they are complying with federal requirements to investigate and report incidents of sexual violence on their campuses.

"What I see is a mistrust of the universities to handle the problem," Assemblyman Adam Gray, D-Merced, said following testimony from student representatives. "Without consequences, I don't know that we can fairly expect the sentiment or behavior to change."

The hearing followed a state audit, released last week, that concluded California's universities are not doing enough to ensure all employees are trained to handle incidents of sexual violence. It also recommended more education be provided to students about prevention and campus resources available to them if they are assaulted.

It’s suddenly a “rape culture’ because Hillary is running, and so women need to fear men.

Rape goes way back.

“Therefore let no man hasten to depart home till each have lain by some Trojan’s wife and paid back the strivings and groans for Helen’s sake.”—HOMER THE ILLIAD

Rape is not a university issue. Rape is a crime. Let the cops and the courts deal with it. Let the universities stick to their area of competence, such as punishing plagiarism and cheating on exams.

Some 16 or 17 years ago ,u daughter enrolled at UC Santa Barbara. Dad went along for her orientation and class selections etc.
In one of those break out sections where parents and kids are in different room, some guy from one of those “study” departments talked about rape on UCSB. He said that before my daughter graduates one in four females at UCSB would experience rape. I was ready to pack her up and take her home. However something didn’t ring true. It was the word “experience”. I started to drill down. I asked how many rapes occurred on campus, off campus or in the town. Finally he coughed up that there was one reported rape on campus in several years. They said that if a girl heard about a rape, thought about, knew someone or knew someone who knew someone who knew someone, they considered that experiencing rape.

No real rapes in 4 years at UCSB while my daughter was there.

Well at least it isn’t global warming.

Its all PR and posturing

I visited a potential university together with my daughter - on one side of their face, the administration gave the PC BS about sexual assault, and then on the other side of their face talked about how dorms and hall were completely mixed male and female “for diversity.”

Well, we educate many of the worlds children in our Universities, and many have majority populations made up of non-Americans.

Many from some bad parts of the world. Just sayin...

First feminazis teach girls that sex is great. Then they tell girls sex has no consequences. Then they say have as much sex as possible, act a slut, and hook up with anyone you want. Then they have Sandra Fluck fighting for their free birth control. All the while the ugly feminazis who no one would touch tell them ALL sex is rape and any time they have had sex they were raped. WTF is wrong with liberals and why does anyone believe them?

More national socialist democrat party fantasy. You know like climate change in which nothing has changed now for 20 years. And now we have a “rape culture” at colleges across the nation. You know, a culture in which almost no ACTUAL rapes are ever criminally prosecuted.

Are California campus rape issues possibly related to California’s approach, whatever that is, to sex education through 12th grade?

The whole Illiad turns on “the wrath of Achilles.”

He was wrathful because Agamemnon had taken his captive Briseis away before he could rape her.

The campus rape hysteria is a manifestation of the academy becoming untethered from reality. Your experience is undoubtedly the norm. Feminist cranks use rape the way socialists use "hunger." Today, you are defined as "hungry" if you so much as worry about what you will have to eat tomorrow. Campuses define "rape" to include leering and clumsy propositions.

So because the best of the best of these countries in "the bad part of the world" come to our universities, those universities now have a "rape culture"?

Well hell yes, let's teach our college women to hate and fear all men then! Absolutely! Can't have enough fear and loathing, especially if it will ensure they vote for non-fearful women, instead of keep voting for rape cultur men who go to the same college as non-raping men from other countries where it is know that rape occurs.

Abso-frickin-lutely.

And don't just believe me - tell your friends on DU - they'll ALL agree.

I’ve never even read DU, and I think we misunderstand each other. All I’m suggesting is that it is possible that a major demographic shift has occurred at many universities, and that demographic pool may include people from parts of the world who don’t view such an assault as being as horrible as I do.

Amazing that none of these anti rape programs and ideas include “no alcohol on campus”.

Too many schools have assinine and contradictory rules. Admin and boosters want booze at events...and never outright ban alcohol
