Caught on tape: Vietnam veteran attacked at convenience store (Sucker-Punched-VIDEO)
WRDW ^ | 7-1-2014

A Vietnam Veteran was attacked at a Columbia County convenience store Monday. He said he was in line to buy water after a run, but investigators say another customer was way out of line when he punched him.

After fighting for our county for 21 years, Jacob Cooter, 77, said he knows a thing or two about a fair fight.

"For the man to sucker punch me, he's kind of a coward," Cooter said. "The man was maybe a foot taller than me and a 100 pounds more," Cooter said. "He had no business hitting an old fella."

That name Cooter reminds me of something. When I was a kid growing up in NW Florida, we called turtles “cooters”.

We also called the car trunk, the “cooter hull”. I have not heard that expression in a long time. I wonder if anyone else used that term?

That is interesting... So you would not make any judgement on who was hit and why? Strange reaction I’d say. I tend to make judgements on all of these things, who, why, and what the hell were they thinking...

You must be one of those enlightened fellows that takes no stances either way. Let the world do their own thing, but don’t involve me in any way...geez! You are one grand fellow!

Really, you think the punishment for a crime should depend upon who the victim is?

This is an alien and anti-American idea. Did you ever wonder why the statue of Justice was blindfolded? Did it ever occur to you to think about it?

I think if the victim was an elderly man or a child then the punishment should be stronger. In other words hitting a more vulnerable person should carry a higher price.

I guess technically the fact he was a vet should not affect the punishment.

So, to your thinking, you should not stop a thief or stop any crime in progress because of who the victim is?

You are not really being serious here...

You always have to take action depending upon the circumstances but according to you, not necessarily so.

Please...clarify your position. Blind justice has nothing to do with citizens reaction to crimes in progress.

You turned my position on it’s head. I won’t speculate on your motive.

My position is it doesn’t matter who the perp is, doesn’t matter who the victim is. All that matters is the facts of the crime.

That is the fundamental basis of American justice.

Would you do your best to protect a woman? Is that misogynist? Would you jump in to protect your brother?

What are your limits? How would you protect them for the justice system? Just where are your boundaries?

Sorry, but our justice system does take into account the gender of the victim, the age, and the reason of the assault. That is fact so why don’t we?

All of this is always taken into consideration and so should we when countering assaults by those that could care less.

You are wrong. Assault is assault. Same crime regardless of the sex of the victim.

“Really, you think the punishment for a crime should depend upon who the victim is?”

It not only does but has become a problem today in that females seem to get the benefit of the doubt! Actually, that also depend upon age (news helps here) but it does happen.

Not that I am supporting that but when attacking a vet occurs, it is normal for most folks to get upset (not the liberals of course).

I don’t know what your beef is.

OBVIOUSLY veteran deserve our respect. That’s not what we are talking about. We are talking about a victim of a crime. I don’t think a Vet is less a victim or more a victim because of he’s a vet. So in the context of this discussion the victim’s veteran status is completely irrelevant.

In other contexts OF COURSE it’s relevant.

Well, I have to say that you are the better man for showing restraint and taking the non-confrontational way out...

You must be a good Vet... I also get upset when Vets get attacked! Have a good one...
