Speaking in New York City last week, Wall Street billionaire Tom Steyer laid clear his vision for penalizing people whose actions may contribute to climate change.
We need to reward people whose behavior reduces climate risk and penalize people who add to it, said Steyer If we can get this right, I think theres no doubt that our economy is going to continue to do very well.
He was joined by several wealthy businessmen such as Michael Bloomberg and former bankers and government officials Hank Paulson and Robert Reich to unveil a report from Risky Business, an economic analysis of the financial impact to be caused by climate change.
A Wall Street baron, Steyers words are not to be taken lightly. Deemed the liberal answer to the Koch Brothers, hes one of the richest businessman in the United States and played a key part in raising millions of dollars to elect Barack Obama in 2008 once Hillary Clinton lost the Democratic nomination.
He met with the president this week to discuss what the White House could do to tackle climate change, and how insurance industrys role in helping American communities prepare for extreme weather and other impacts of climate change, according to Reuters.
That points to a plan to allow insurance companies to begin assessing for climate risk in certain industries, a more market-focused approach to discourage industries from emitting large amounts of carbon dioxide.
Some of the people who may be penalized for adding to climate risks, however, are workers in plants and factories all over the rust belt of the United States. While they recognize the need to mitigate the effects of climate change, some believe this shouldnt come to the detriment of industries and traditional blue-collar workers.
It is a fact that global warming threatens our planet. Scientists are as certain of this as they are of the dangers of smoking or riding in a car without a seatbelt, said Tony Montana, spokesman for the local United Steelworkers union in Pittsburgh. Declaring war on entire industries, such as coal, oil, or natural gas, however, is not the answer. These industries created and supported a way of life for workers and their communities for generations.
The answer to the threat of global warming is to focus on building a sustainable energy policy that includes all options, including the clean usage of fossil fuels in addition to hydroelectric, wind, solar and other renewable energy sources, added Montana. As these industries and technologies develop, the USW is working to make sure that there will be a strong demand for our unions core products such as steel, concrete, glass and rubber.
If the idea of penalizing carbon emitters eventually makes it to the political process, Steyer has assured he will have allies in the fight.
NextGen Climate Action, a multi-million dollar political action committee funded entirely by Steyer, has already beefed up the Democratic Senate Majority PAC with more than $5 million in preparation for next years election to guarantee the issue of climate change remains a political issue in many key states. Key union groups have similarly received funding by Steyer.
The American Federation of County, State, & Municipal Employees, one of the largest unions in the U.S., has already received $10,000 from Steyers PAC in 2014, according to documents filed with the Federal Elections Commission.
A representative from AFCSME refused to speak to Watchdog.org for this report.
It’s really hard not to hate these people.
That’s one sick SOB.
Then charge ALGORE the most. He has a 40,000 sq ft house and drives a hummer & flies all over the country in a jet with a lot of empty seats. . . . . . He should be flying commercial.
Eat the rich.
If you exclude billionaires and welfare queens, there are very few people who think our economy is doing well at all. He's right though that if we add to the cost of creating jobs with a carbon tax (a tax on breathing!!!), we will continue this jobless "recovery", we will continue to lose full time jobs, and we will continue to lose manufacturing jobs.
The American people are seething with anger at the continued fraud and corruption of rich people. I mean the ones that fund the leftists who rob us of our freedom and seek to enslave us.
These scumbags better watch their P’s and Q’s.
“Speaking in New York City last week,”
“Tom Steyer wants to penalize people who add to climate risk”
Tom, you need to sit down with the SUN and have a serious conversation.
He's in the upper 1%, they are doing 'very well' in todays rigged economy. The rest of us, not so much.
He's like Soros, very much in need of an 'accident'.
Mr Steyer, you are entirely correct. Contributing unduly to the risks associated with climate change are indeed worthy of punishment.
I suggest, in a two-fold interest, to injuriously tax you away from your billions. On the first part, you have no business hoarding all that cash at the expense of the poor working man, and on the second part, your Billions are responsible to fueling industry with capital to expand pollution in this country. Your ‘billions’ aren’t sitting around in a safe; they are out loaning money to polluters, to homebuilders that cut down trees, to normal people buying cars that pollute, pollute, pollute.
I say we divest you entirely from moral and environmental problem so that as a good little socialist you can sleep comfortably in the smugness of ideological stupor.
Someone please advise Mr. Steyer that he may no longer fly or drive. He must either bicycle or sail. No excessive methane emissions as well.
Calling Meghan Kelly!!!! We need an expose on Tom Steyer. We need to know who he is and how he stands to profit from his support of “climate change.”
How are people this stupid successful. He really believes this BS.
Algore should be doing 600 years then.
Did he make this statement from the theater area of his private 777?
Add to that no more heating or cooling systems in any of his 8 homes.
You fool! What could the sun *possibly* have to do with the earth's climate?????
Tax and punish Fat People. They have a much larger carbon Butt Print.
And after the meeting they all got into their limos or suvs that were left running with the a/c on (bloomberg was known to do that) and then head to the airport and jet off to one of their multiple homes.
Conflict between the envrio nazis and big labor would be a good thing.
