Obama Administration Plans To Dramatically Alter Transportation Funding For States

Starting in August, the Obama administration will dramatically revamp and cut back the formula it uses to send transportation funds to the states unless Congress replenishes the Highway Trust Fund

The Department of Transportation (DOT) predicts that the fund, which has traditionally drawn its revenue from the federal gas tax of 18.4 cents per gallon, will be depleted by late August .

The agency will use a previously-established formula to calculate the percentage of remaining funds that each state will receive, with new revenues coming in every two weeks as money from the gas tax comes into the fund.

The only one I can think of is the I-90 renovations near Lake Keechelus that have been ongoing for 20+ years.

There have been “Future I-26” signs on a portion of the highway in Western NC since I was in high school and I'm 63 yo now.

I hear they built some nice bike paths and a few other things out of the “Trust” fund money in that same area, though, so I guess that's just as good as actually finishing the Interstate Highway System that was begun under Eisenhower, huh?

This is a good thing. States will never give up money voluntarily. We need our states to be sovereign and self-sufficient. First, transportation funding. Next, education. Get the Feds out of our bidniss.

What transport money has your end of the state received at all?

Olympia has been pissing away money for years to fund studies to extend light rail into Vancouver from Portland, and eventually south to Progressive CaliUtopia.

Meanwhile, it's a daily two hour trip to get across the Columbia, on one of the two bridges, rather than building that third bridge to Hillsboro...

You are correct, no more threats from the feds to withhold the funds... if the funds aren’t there to begin with.

He’s attempting now to let states know he holds the purse.
************************
That’s been a major failing of his all along. He doesn’t realize that it’s the House that controls the purse.

IF the Pubs can win the Senate, they should begin defunding portions of a lot of the “extra” agencies in the Exec and eliminating others not Constitutionally provided for, like the DoEduc, EPA, NLRB, etc.

They won’t spend a dime on anything except mass transit boondoggles

Don't leave our well managed ferry boat fleet.

This question needs to be pursued with tenacity concerning EVERY single Feral agency. It’s time to cut up the credit card!

Oh to be a Governor of a state, I can see a future road project in front of every Federal building in my state. So we had the money to start the project, then the funds just disappeared.

“......Democrats like to make people suffer, then tell them if they would just vote for them everything will get better.”.....

There is more truth than fiction in that statement.

Its not like the funds were actually being spent to fix roads or build them or maintain them.
If we’ve been paying taxes on gas for years, where has the money gone? All these “funds” need audited.

Again, can he do that?

He is operating outside the system, with the collaboration of a significant majority of Senators and a large minority (perhaps a narrow majority) in the House.

The mechanisms to contain him have failed, and continue to fail.

When Al Gore's law team appealed to the General Will in Florida 2000, announcing that simple arithmetical counting of votes no longer conferred legitimacy, this day became inevitable.

Only those sworn to uphold and to protect the Constitution against domestic enemies can act now, and if and when they do, it's going to be a great big bloody mess.

God help us.

Where exactly does all the money collected every single day in gas taxes go?

Train stations and bycicle paths as well as mass transit projects.

The original intent was for the taxes to be spent on road repairs and upgrades but politicians in DC and local areas have colluded to move a large percentage of that cash to boondoggle projects that have nothing to do with roads.

And I bet all the choo-choo boondoggles and bike paths will get full funding.

Willie Green is jumping for joy. Caused his demise here at FR.
