Christie vetoes gun control bill to reduce size of ammunition magazines

TRENTON — Gov. Chris Christie today vetoed a gun control bill that would have reduced the permitted size of ammunition magazines, saying it would do nothing to reduce gun violence.

“This is the very embodiment of reform in name only. It simply defies common sense to believe that imposing a new and entirely arbitrary number of bullets that can be lawfully loaded into a firearm will somehow eradicate, or even reduce, future instances of mass violence,” Christie said. “Nor is it sufficient to claim that a ten-round capacity might spare an eleventh victim.”

The move came less than an hour after gun control advocates — including parents of two children killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting — dropped off at Christie's office 55,000 signatures of people from around the country, including 10,000 from New Jersey, urging him to sign the measure.

And shame on the name callers throwing out insults like six-year-olds. Grow up.

In your own self, you obviously confuse arrogance with maturity.

“I believe that each state should have the right to make firearms laws as they see fit. I don’t believe it’s right for the federal government to get into the middle of this and decide firearms laws for the people of the state of NJ,” Christie told “The Record” in July 2009.”

What part of that do you not understand?

You can’t claim to support the 2nd amendment and think states should have the right to violate it at will!

Apparently you don’t consider fat jokes to be juvenile?
I judge arguments on their merit, not on the harshness of the personal attack.
Our definition of an ‘arrogant asshole’ might differ.

I think fat jokes are human. Christie’s extreme weight problem indicates character weakness. Sorry, that is HUMAN NATURE.

Yeah right, the fat jokes by some Freepers give so much credence to your argument. For Pete’s sake, it was the proper thing to Veto this bill. If he had not, he would have been wrong. But people are so small minded that cannot even acknowledge the fact that he acted properly in this particular case. And next time you want to flaunt your “maturity”, try and do so without the profanity.

I don't think the 2nd Amendment should be violated. The Feds and the. States violate it. The SCOTUS just 2 months ago ruled that states can have “reasonable firearm restrictions” - whatever that means. I believe that was concerning the Colorado laws. The next day, the Democrats in NJ rammed through this latest bill, that Christie properly vetoed. I don't expect justice until Jesus Christ rules on this earth. Until then, I will applaud decisions that are CORRECT to that case, and Christie should be praised by Conservatives for THIS veto. And Yes, I think the rest of the gun laws are unconstitutional. But the behavior of some people on this board borders on being bipolar. Hey, if I want ideological perfect purity, my support for Republicans will be exactly zero.

regardless of the source, those petitions end up in the circular filing unit. Petitions are just a means for the organizers to collect emails and addresses and phone numbers which can be sold to politicians raising money.

Whatever.

But for the gun owners of New Jersey this is a brief but temporary victory in their fight with the maniac Democrats in Trenton.

The enemy of my enemy may not always be my friend, but there are times he is and this is one of them.

I am thankful the governor vetoed the bill, I am well aware of why he did so, but I am thankful anyway.

You and some of the other posters here really miss the point.

The point being its a good thing he vetoed the bill and we should congratulate politicians when they do the right thing, regardless of motivation. You can be SURE he will hear from the anti-gun crowd. We have an opportunity to speak LOUDER by thanking him. As he is more like a pragmatist than an ideologue it MIGHT influence him in the future.

I have been in the FOREFRONT of refuting people on this site who were backing Christie as the second coming after he beat up on the teachers and civil service unions - people like Ann COulter.

I POINTED OUT:

Christie was NOT really pro-gun. But he is not ANTI-GUN either. Tom Kean Senior would have signed that bill in a heartbeat. He is a dogmatic ideologue Rockefeller Republican who doesn’t believe in the Second Amendment.
On the other hand EVERY Republican representative in New Jersey EVEN THE RINOS voted AGAINST this foolish bill.

Christie IS pro-Muslim.

Christie IS pro-illegal invader

Christie did NOTHING to improve the New Jersey State economy or business friendliness since he took office.

Christie IS an arrogant bull in a China Shop, as shown by the “Bridgegate: scandal - what a stupid stunt - REALLY - but quintessentially Christie.

FINALLY, I HEARD Mark Levin’s tape playing of Christie’s clueless, pragmatic response to the Hobby Lobby Decision.

I KNOW what he is.

BUT, CONGRATULATE these people when YOU think they are right because YOU CAN BE SURE, the opposition will CRITICIZE them when they are on our side on an issue.

Good post on many points, Zulu, BUT (you knew the "but" was coming! ;^) praising Christie for this is stepping into a trap. On the contrary, Christie needs to KNOW and HEAR that he has forfeited our trust and that he has to do a lot more than shoot fish in a barrel to impress us with his hunting prowess and marksmanship.

Very courageous post.

Christie better diet, if he doesn’t want to die yet.
