Believe it or not, it was 10 years ago this month that Barack Obama, then a candidate for the U.S. Senate, introduced himself to America with a speech that shook the Fleet Center in Boston. The main theme of that Democratic convention was the litany of George W. Bush's failures an unpopular and unending war in Iraq, a faltering image abroad, a stagnating middle class. Obama gave eloquent voice to those frustrations, arguing that all of them could be addressed if only we reunited the electorate.
Probably Obama himself would not have guessed then that he would ascend to the White House just four years later. But he certainly wouldn't have imagined that a full decade on, nearing the halfway point in his second term, he would find himself dragged down by precisely the same set of issues that vexed his predecessor.
After a month that saw Iraq unravel and job growth continue to plod along, while the stock market soared, the central paradox of the Obama years, as historians will undoubtedly view it, has never been clearer. It's Obama's presidency, but he's still governing in Bush's world.

Matt Bai: So bad that not even the NYT could keep him.
So Bush so completely changed the entire world that even Messiah Obama can’t fix it? Wow. For an incompetent idiot chimp who couldn’t think his way out of a paper bag, Bush sure did have a huge impact on the world.
As an aside, I know a kid who got in trouble when he was younger by taking a car for a joy ride before he even had his licence. The police car spotted him, turned on the sirens and pulled him over. When the officer came to his window, he said, “it wasn’t me, I wasn’t driving.” I think of that kid every time I read a story like this. The Libs will always — always — be able to blame Bush even when it is crystal clear that Obama is responsible.
I don’t know about anyone else here but I was doing very well economicly during the eight years of George W.Bush’s term.
I didn’t start feeling the pain until the Clown Prince was elected. This Clown has done so much damage it’s unbelievable.
Well, that settles it.
George W. Bush is officially the most intelligent, competent and powerful man in the history of the world.
>> he’s still governing in Bush’s world.
that dealt with Clinton’s neglect of terrorism.
I had a job that paid well, $90K + the entire Bush presidency. Due to economic downturn and personal stuff, Haven’t had a full time job since two weeks after O’Blamer was ELECTED POTUS.
What people forget is that the Unemployment rate was below 7% until December 2008 when Businesses started shedding jobs like a stripper sheds clothes at the knowledge of Obama getting in. Hell, it was below 6% until August 2008 when it became a certainty that McCain wasn’t going to attempt to get elected and Obama would be elected.
I did better and better under Reagan and G.H.W. Bush, I started downhill under Clinton, recovered somewhat under G.W. Bush and things have gotten tougher and tougher since 2008. The cost of living has risen very rapidly while the people responsible lie and say that the inflation rate is too low or even nonexistent, like saying there are no alligators in Louisiana. I recall when two hundred a week was a dream, only an exalted few had a hope of earning that kind of income. Now two hundred a day for a five day week is a pittance, worth far LESS than twenty a day was worth when I first hit twenty a day. An overnight stay in a hospital can run up a bill equal to a year’s stay when I was a little tyke.
I consider myself lucky to have a job.
But, since Obama, my salary has been frozen, then cut, then partially restored, but still less than when he came into office. Meanwhile, the cost of everything continues to skyrocket.
Our heads are still above water, but if you extrapolate out a few years out, they won’t be.
I know a lot of people are a lot worse off, and, sadly, it’s through no fault of their own.
Same here.
Holy cr@p Hussein has been in office 6 years and he still isn’t being held responsible for the chaos he created?
I make much more than ever before. Somehow, my standard of living has not improved. Inflation for things like energy and food is killing me.
Was there ever a Clinton world?
See, that is what I have been saying for years now. When you bill yourself as a ‘Messiah’, you really have no room for excuses. A ‘Messiah’ can overcome any circumstance because he has supreme power at his disposal. HE was the only person who could solve our problems. Now, as it happens, I guess the problems were worse than he thought. Two problems with that. 1) He is not much of a Messiah because it shouldn’t matter, and 2) I guess the boy genius didn’t know as much as he told us he did back in 2008. And he hasn’t learned anything since.
Things were fine until Pelosi took over Congress and started ramming through her leftist agenda. Then, thanks to Barney Frank and his corrupt friends, the financial "crisis" came to a head suspiciously just at the perfect time to help sway the elections.
So, being the “not Bush” for six years has made things even worse. What’s up with that?
