Airlines with direct flights to the United States have been told to tighten screening of mobile phones and shoes in response to intelligence reports of increased threats from al Qaeda-affiliated militant groups, U.S. officials said on Thursday.
The officials singled out smartphones including iPhones made by Apple Inc and Galaxy phones made by Samsung Electronics Co Ltd for extra security checks on U.S.-bound direct flights from Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
U.S. security officials said they fear bombmakers from the Yemen-based al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) have figured out how to turn the phones into explosive devices that can avoid detection.
They also are concerned that hard-to-detect bombs could be built into shoes, said the officials, who declined to be identified because of the sensitivity of the issue.
A U.S. official said that other electronic devices carried by passengers also are likely to receive more intense scrutiny.

Just to be sfe, put it in your shoe. :-)
Yes, tighten the airport screening of US citizens, but let anyone walk across the border that chooses to do so.
Too many embarrassing videos of TSAholes showing up on YouTube, huh?
You wrote exactly what I was thinking. Those in our government are so screwed up - and are screwing up our country.
Anyone in congress interested in the fact that the illegals crossing in through the Texas border are not getting this scrutiny?
Their Mision:
Do anything they can do to make life more inconvenient and miserable for middle class Americans.
I’ve flown private for the last 12 years but, each time I fly commercial I think “How much dumber can these A-holes get?”
The kewel thing is there is a new plan that is semi private. $1,500 per month and I can fly all I want up and down California, nevada and Phoenix.
Whe I start snowboarding this winter thatz all I’m gonna do is fly everywhere.
this particular plan is so much cheaper than NetJets and will save me a ton of time.
just to go snowboarding is 4-5 hours by car.
with this program I’ll be there in 2.5 hours max. And as often as I travel it’ll pay for itself in two trips.
no shoe check, planes leave on time, can run my devices while taxi’ing, ascending, descending and there is free booze, diet coke and coffee. I can even order concierge from ACN Atlantic. Same food...less money.
Can’t wait.
Surf Air = No TSA?
Really?
That’s it and nope. TSA only wants your name for manifest.
Oh, you think that airport security is about protecting people? I think it's about protecting the investment in a $300 million aircraft.
That's not a problem at the border.

So now they are searching for shoe-phones?
