The jobs report knows: Americans aren't planning to take a summer vacation

Economists and lawmakers view the jobs report as good news. The US economy gained 288,000 jobs, and the unemployment rate dropped to 6.1%. One economist even said the report is "as good an excuse as any to enjoy the weekend's fireworks." Yet as Americans struggle to make do with their stagnant wages and the bills that never seem to stop piling up, one thing has to go: vacations. So as businesses anticipate a slower summer, thousands of restaurant and hotel workers are left without work.

We’re not taking a summer vacation. Since the kids are pretty much out of the house, we go the first week of October. Weather and water still warm, shops and restaurants still open, no crowds and winter rates. Can’t beat it.

>>Sheeeeyit. Half of Americans are on permanent vacation.

And most of the other half are working their butts off to cover the duties of the people who were laid off so the boss can take a vacation.

The Progressives love the word “sustainable”. But they never mention the unsustainable economy that survives on credit, threats, lies, and overtime.

“Vacation? can’t afford one.”

We’ve tightened our belts while paying off debt, but always take the kids away for a bit (a week for us is from Monday through Friday - a “new normal” week of vacation). We save a bit by going for four nights instead of six (and living like Gypsies); you pray a lot for good weather when you do that...

A vacation was on the radar, granted a short one but a round of knee trouble killed that. I was looking forward to my first mvpa convention. Maybe next year....

Ditto. Although to be honest we have to wait until our last dog passes on to the Rainbow Bridge before we would be able to go anywhere. He's 17 and trying to live forever. Bugger.

My son and his family do the same thing. They try to find inexpensive motel rooms which include a microwave and a frig so they can eat in more and they always take a tent and sleeping bags in case push comes to shove and they have to camp out. Huge rain storm last year in Colorado and they ended up at the local YMCA. That, according to my grandson, was quite an adventure. Two major problems this year are the cost of gas and food.

One of the things they discovered is that hotel rooms often cost less on weekends because that is when they don’t have business people there who are on expense accounts.

And the article is in the foreign press, which has become the modern day equivalent of “Radio Free America”, in reverse.

What a choice, eh?

1. Go on vacation, or

2. Get ready for the big crash.

What’s a vacation?

I think it's something that the "exempt" do a few times a year.

Thanks for the tips.

The places we go don’t have business visitors; the pricing works in reverse (weekends are the time of biggest demand - so we avoid them).

The fridge and microwave are great; you drive a few minutes further to shop where the locals shop (saving a huge amount), and rarely eat out.

I like camping myself, but my wife can’t sleep enough on the ground (the pads only do so much) - that messes up the next day. One night she slept in the car at a campground because she new after a few minutes in the tent that she wouldn’t sleep all night.

I think a lot of these concepts will be making a revivial as costly vacations become a thing of the past for most people.

I’ll finally get to go on one unless the EMS place I just interviewed at hires me. Been saving up for it since last year and it’s finally a guaranteed thing.
