A border patrol agent was diagnosed with scabies after processing undocumented immigrants in Otay Mesa, California, the agent's union representative said. Ronald Zermeno, health and safety director for the National Border Control Council union, said the agent told him that he observed several people with open sores while screening them in preparation to be released to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Scabies is caused by a mite that burrows into skin and lays eggs, causing an intense itching and rash, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

During the very first African bush medical clinic I ever helped with, I was handed a tin can, paint brush and a gallon jug of benzyl benzoate and told:
Nurse: "This woman has scabies. Pour some of the benzyl benzoate into the can and paint her."
Me: "Paint her?"
Nurse: "Paint her!"
Me: "Where?"
Nurse: "All over."
Me: (totally flummoxed) "All over?"
Nurse: "All Over, except the eyes, nostrils & mouth... & 'privates'! Paint her baby, too."
Well, both the patient and the "medical tech" (me) survived the procedure. The patient was far less traumatized that was I.
Two decades ago a friend came back from a visit to Russia and gave us all a welcome back hug. Then we all developed scabies. Seems they washed sheets in hotels with cold water. My husband and I got rid of them quickly with hot laundry and skin medicine, but the kids kept finding shirts and jackets dropped behind furniture and reinfecting themselves. Took over 6 months to get rid of our infestation. “From Russia with love.”
