RHODE ISLAND PARENTS PETITION SCHOOL DISTRICT TO OPT OUT OF COMMON CORE
Breitbart Big Government ^ | 6 Jul 2014 | by DR. SUSAN BERRY

Posted on 07/06/2014 6:41:38 PM PDT by kingattax

Where states are failing to repeal the controversial Common Core standards, many parents have decided to take matters into their own hands and petition their local school districts to drop the nationalized standards and replace them with others of their choosing.

In Rhode Island, Smithfield parent Rema Tomka has organized a group of other local concerned parents who have joined a larger anti-Common Core group called “Collapse the Core.” Tomka and her group have signed almost 200 people to a petition calling for their school district to opt out of the Common Core standards.

The petition reads as follows:

We, the undersigned taxpayers of Smithfield, Rhode Island, demand that the Smithfield School Committee as the legally elected local education authority:

Vote to eliminate use of the Common Core State Standards in the Town of Smithfield, Rhode Island.

Vote to adopt/develop new and stronger standards in ELA and math for the district by the start of the 2014-2015 school year.

Authorize the superintendent and teaching staff in ELA and math to use as working blueprints for new standards the free ELA standards written by Sandra Stotsky and posted on her University of Arkansas webpage (based on the former Massachusetts ELA standards) and a set of math standards chosen by the high school mathematics staff from the following: Minnesota, California 1997, Indiana 2006, or Massachusetts 2000.

Vote to direct the superintendent, all school administrators, and all teachers to adjust their K-12 curriculum to address the new standards for the 2014-2015 school year.

Once new standards are developed and adopted, vote to refuse to administer any Common Core-aligned state tests on the grounds that they are incompatible with the locally adopted or approved standards and curriculum.

Signatories: The taxpayers or residents of Smithfield, Rhode Island.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the “other” articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself) The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. Metmom holds both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail Metmom if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

The will pacify the parents by saying they are opting out but will merely keep the same curriculum with a different name.

Same old, same old.

I posted the acronym for Another Reason to Homeschool. A government school defender ( a teacher) r reported me to the moderator for posting porn. ( Really!)

She said that the acronym stood for a porn expression. The moderator threatened to ban me.

Geeze! The strategies that the government school defenders use to wipe out the voice of opposition is ....so?.....Well!....Liberal! I bet they learn this in their college of education courses.

That acronym is defined by Urban Dictionary as equivalent to "swag" which has a nasty, pejorative meaning. But I would not have recognized it, i.e. I had to look for it.

If you modify it slightly to "artoh" then there can be no misreading.

I think that’s why I always type it out too. Although I did not know of this other definition.

We’ve been using the keyword “arth” for years. There are many, many articles tagged with this keyword. No one ever complained, and I believe none of us had any idea it was used as a slang word.

In searching via Google, I found an organization called “Action Research and Training for Health.” Apparently this organization has no problem using the acronym ARTH.

Pinging Metmom to this discussion for when she returns.

Like I said, I did not recognize the acronym having that particular meaning nor would I object to it on the Religion Forum.

Thanks for the clarification. I was just expressing surprise because I never knew it was a slang term. It’s good for us to know that the keyword might be misunderstood.

The truth is that it is becoming increasingly difficult to say anything anymore that some group of freaks, perverts, whatever hasn't adapted letters, symbols, words etc for their own exclusive use for their purpose and becomes that in everyday language. This is no joke my wife likes to wear the cheap real thin rounded and colored rubber band like elastic bracelets. Our grand daughter came home from high school saying wearing this color or that color bracelet means this or that and none of it good.

We can't allow the taking away of words, things etc from our own use that groups are using to turn into perverse meanings. Rainbow and Gay are two of the prime examples of this. Stolen and adapted and now nearly owned by others. The word Queer used to also have a different meaning & it too is now owned by fringes groups. Where do we stop? If we stop they win. When do we say enough? Context of subject should give someone a clue as to intent and meaning. If they don't understand they should ask the poster.

I never use the word ‘gay’ — I figure it’s better understood when I use homosexual and tell it like it is.

What you say is so true, though.

God bless.

Amen, cva66snipe. What you posted is so true.

Sometimes it’s good to know about these alternate meanings so that we’re aware of how our words, clothing, etc. could be misconstrued. But the situation with common words being assigned depraved meanings has gotten out of hand.

I simply cannot believe the pettiness of some people as to complain about an acronym that is blindingly obvious in its meaning and that has been used for YEARS!

When I post the Another Reason to Homeschool list, I make clear that I use the acronym and what it means.

I have to agree. This is just another tactic to try to silence homeschoolers and on FR no less.

How pathetic.

How about instead of banning wintertime for using the acronym, the instigators get told to get over themselves and stop being so easily offended?

And grow up.

If we change it, someone will find something else to be offended over. The perpetually offended will do that.

My goodness.
