Benghazi panel ramps up

There are no Benghazi hearings on the House calendar, but the silence doesn’t mean the investigation is fading away.

Rep. Trey Gowdy is launching a special committee to wrangle a probe that’s sprawled across the jurisdictions of multiple headline-hungry committee chairmen.

And while the South Carolina Republican isn’t committing to specifics, like whether there will be public hearings with high-profile witnesses like former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, his methodical approach could help the GOP savor a scandal that has at times looked more like a political sideshow.

“No one [has] defended the five-minute questioning [process] as the most calculated way of eliciting the most amount of information,” Gowdy said in an interview. “There is most assuredly a place for hearings but not if your primary focus is to gather facts.”

While there isn’t much happening publicly, the House select committee investigating the Sept. 11, 2012, attacks on the U.S. facility in Benghazi, Libya, is busy behind the scenes.

The panel is examining subpoenas from committees that previously investigated the Benghazi attacks to develop a list of unanswered questions from the Obama administration. There is also outreach to agencies that received requests for information.

Meanwhile, Gowdy is planning a series of closed-door meetings this month that could include a screening of a classified video from the Benghazi compound. He’s also checking with the 11 other lawmakers on the panel about working through the August recess.

Why would anyone light up a target unless they were in radio contact with an incoming bird loaded with JDAMS?. Someone stood that bird down. Then that someone some went to bed, got up the next day and calmly went about golfing and fundraising.

Benghazi ping.

Let Republicanprofessor know if you want on or off this ping list.

I’ve been wondering what was going on with Trey Gowdy’s committee; this answers some questions.

Here's a snip from the end. Most interesting.

"Democrats on the committee recently hired Susanne Sachsman Grooms as their staff director. She is a former Department of Justice prosecutor, who was the lead attorney for Oversight Committee Democrats on three highly controversial investigations: the Fast and Furious gun-walking operation, the IRS targeting of tea party groups, and Benghazi.

Thanks for the ping, as always appreciated. I had also been wondering what was happening, and took some encouragement from the fact that Gowdy is in charge.

This article confirms that Gowdy is serious and will not turn this into a spectacle to be panned and mocked in the state propaganda media. I don’t think anyone will be able to paint him and this committee as a loose cannon.

It looks like she is there for damage control, obfuscation, and tactical leaks.

Although I am impatient for the hearings to begin and for the truth to come out, I think Gowdy is smart to wait (as it appears that he is) for the fall. People would doubly ignore the testimony if held in the summer.

You probably saw from the full article that he has not only scheduled closed door sessions for this month, but he is also polling the other members of the committee “about working through the August recess.”

I like that. I hope they will be ready to go more public come September.

Somewhere I recall reading (or hearing) Gowdy explain that closed door depositions are longer and more detailed. That’s were the real nitty gritty is done. Then when all that is hashed out, the same people are brought before the panel and asked the questions once again for public airing, knowing full well what the answers will be.

There are a lot of questions to be answered. The challenge is that there are multiple overlapping spheres of inquiry and multiple layers within each of the spheres. Off the top of my head I’d say there are at least three spheres: the “reported” cause, the “response” (non-response) to the event, and the reason for an American ambassador being there in the first place.

They are inter-related areas of inquiry, and I am happy that it is the meticulous legal mind of Gowdy laying out the process.

Someone knows what the graffiti says, and its significance. I don’t doubt that that stone will be turned over in time.

An Ambassador is “normally” located at the Embassy and that would be in the Capital Tripoli!!!

So the BIG question is WHAT was he doing in Benghazi, (we probably know,) there was not even an official Consulate there, and if, then there would have been a Consular there for business???
