Police Chief in Uniform Told to Leave Gun Outside Ikea
NBSWashington.com ^ | Monday, Jul 7, 2014 | Chris Gordon

Posted on 07/08/2014 3:40:09 AM PDT by Abathar

In 35 years in law enforcement, said the Takoma Park Police chief, he's never had this happen.

He's never had a store tell him that he would have to leave his service weapon in the car or leave the store -- especially when he was in his police uniform.

But that's what happened July 4 in the Ikea in College Park, where Takoma Park Police Chief Alan Goldberg had stopped in with his daughter. Goldberg was in uniform because he had worked that morning at the city's July 4 parade, and would be back on duty that night for fireworks.

In between, he stopped at Ikea to shop for furniture for his daughter's new apartment. And that's when a loss-prevention officer at the store approached him.

"He says we have a no firearms policy, and you're either going to have to leave or you can lock your gun in the car," Goldberg said.

The store has signs posted on the front door that read "Weapons Free Environment."

Neither of those options seemed a good one to the officer.

"It isn't the most prudent thing to do to walk around the store in uniform with an empty holster," Goldberg said. "And I am not going to lock my gun in a commercial parking lot, with people watching me put it in there. That's just ludicrous."

Yesterday I saw a guy riding a motorcycle with a Glock prominently displayed on his hip.

Gave him a thumbs up, though I doubt he saw it.

Not something I ever saw in California...

Other non-shoppers, like North Mountain, said that retailers' no-gun policies should maybe have an exception for citizens. Government employees are less to be trusted.

True that. How many times have we read about a dog being shot by a civilian with a CCW? Zero?

If Ikea advertises that it's a "weapon-free environment", why should gov't employees get a pass when they are shopping in their free time? No doubt Ikea will modify the policy (and probably fire the manager who made the call) but I give the manager kudos for logical consistency -- something that is rare to the point of being almost unheard of in libs.

(Since Ikea stuff seems to be made mostly out of compressed sawdust and glue, I'm not sure it's as as easy to disassemble and reuse as it is to disassemble and chuck down the garbage chute. I thought that was the business plan -- cheap, disposable furnishings that look good.)

Yes. Good inexpensive products. My butt is currently occupying an Ikea chair.

Here in NJ it is difficult to get a concealed carry permit. I have no problem with this guy being stopped (it wouldn’t have happened if he was carrying his off-duty piece concealed). God forbid he abide by the rules his employers (us) have to live with...

DISPATCHER: “Any car in the vicinity of Ikea store, there armed men inside robbing store”

OFFICER: “Tell them they have to enforce their weapons free policy first”

Their gun policy is stupid, but I am happy that the off-duty cop received no special treatment. Why should he be treated any differently from any other law-abiding citizen who goes into Ikea?

Sorry, I am ab Officer of the Law and I am REQUIRED to wear this sidearm. So I can not comply with your silly request.

What are they going to do? Call one of your Officer in to remove you. These companies are just hurting themselves. The vast majority of Americans think things like this are silly at best and just plain ignorant at worst.

In the event that a criminal should be shooting the place up with a gun he snuck inside, the police should wait outside for him to come out when he is finished. That would seem an adequate way to handle their policy. I won’t be visiting Ikea, by the way.

IKEA is not weapon free, as the door stated. I was recently in one and there were knives, pens/pencils, cording and rope, glass, etc.

The chief should disregard the request. He should arrest anyone who tries to interfere with him performing his duties.

OMG. I can not believe this company is that stupid! They basically have publicly claimed that no weapons are ever in their store. So if some nut bag ever would walk in and shoot some people I would sue this asshat company out of business for false advertising........ What a bunch of idiots..........

One reason I so like Missouri. Post all you wish, unless it one of several clearly defined locations in the statutes, I carry concealed anyway. The law clearly sides with the CCW person. If I am asked to leave due to my weapon (which is concealed, BTW) and I don’t, and a peace officer is called, I can be ticketed with a citation ( $35). 2X in a year and I can have my CCW suspended for 6 months. Oooh. Scare me. My weapon is concealed.

I pointed these facts out to my local bank branch (which has a nonconforming sing in the window) and they smiled and said we prefer you guys carry- we have one cop on duty in town and he is 60+, he ain’t likely to run to the guns anyway if someone decided to rob us.

Keep in mind that Ikea is a European (Dutch) company

Where was the store located?
I am sure that any American company doing business in any European Country has to follow their rules and laws I would suggest they follow ours in America.

Some States and many County and local Government REQUIRE their Police to carry at all times. Especially smaller and rural areas where you may be on call at all times. I have bashed the Police often on this forum (for excessive shootings) but in this case the store was wrong PERIOD.

I would assume homsexual sex is allowed in the restrooms.

“Where was the store located?”

The store in the news report is in Tacoma, WA.
The IKEA that I have been to is in Bratislava, Slovakia.

I remember a time when the biggest scandal with police officers was when restaurants and stores provided major discounts for them when dining or shopping in uniform.

Someone complained that it wasn't fair that these stores got “free” security when other stores didn't supply “free” meals, etc., had to pay for such attention.
