I clean high school bathrooms, and my new $15/hour salary will change everything
Washington Post ^ | 7-7-14 | Raul Meza

Monday through Friday, my full-time job is cleaning restrooms at Van Nuys High School. But that work is not the hardest part of my life. The hardest part is saying goodbye to my 4-year-old son when he asks me not to go to work again. In order to make ends meet, I also work weekends and nights.

I know I’m lucky to have a full-time job as a facility attendant in the Los Angeles Unified School District. I’ve done that for 10 years, and some days are better than others, but I like the work, and my co-workers are a supportive second family. We don’t interact much with students, but those of us who do custodial work are eyes and ears for teachers and administrators. If I see a student needs help of any kind, I take pride in letting the right people know.

The one thing that hasn’t been good about the job is the pay. When I started 10 years ago, I made $8.65 per hour; now I make $9.85 per hour. But I just learned that’s going to change. SEIU Local 99, the union that represents me and more than 30,000 other school workers here, just negotiated a new contract that will raise my pay to $15 per hour by 2016.

The headline write calls a per hour rate a “salary”?

It’s California.
Money is not a problema.
If it is in the future, President Warren will decree federal bailouts for blue states.

Non union janitors were making 10 to 15 dollars an hour at my high school back in the 80s.

Its gonna raise costs in private sector businesses. Evidence, last weekend I bought 2 books for $20 4 years ago I could buy 3 for $20 and 6 years ago I could buy 4 books for $15

(they will go up)

Since the 2014 wage limit for Earned Income Credit for Raul appears to be 53 grand, I doubt he is paying ANY income tax at all and likely getting "free money" from Uncle Baraq.

So now instead of 20,000 a year with social services it will be 30,000 a year with reduced social services. Minus union dues and this person is SOL.

15 an hour from the SEIU? This is what killed America. Dem pol negotiates with SEIU and loots the treasury. Dues gets kicked back to election committee after the skim by union leadership. Workers get what they think is a good deal until it all goes bust and they are out of a job while the leaders vacation in Cabo.

I think the word for the SEIU is...parasite.

Hey, Raul! I don't care!

And you'll notice that Raul isn't being paid these bucks by a private-sector firm. No, it's a school district.

Nothing spends as easy as someone else's money.

Raul gets credit for working- it’s called a paycheck. It’s just unfortunate he supports policies that do more to harm the workforce in the long run due to ignorance. I’m glad he’s a net producer. I just wish he could see the harm those policies are eventually going to do to him and others.

a fool and his money.

Huey Long demanded every government worker paid a portion of their income to his reelection campaign. IOW tribute aka union dues.

Any government employee who did not give the kickback, they were fired.

This 15 dollar an hour is a joke. It will be eaten by inflation and “user fees”.

Hobby Lobby pays a minimum of $14 an hour with no union dues to pay.

So you just picked the pockets of a bunch of working people so you can scrub toilets and clean up some kid’s puke for more than some people with college degrees are able to make.”

No kidding. I do more work than this guy and I don’t even make $15 an hour, and depending on the weather I’m lucky to get 40 hours a week sometimes.

First, I wish that the custodian quoted by the article would have commented about the financial effects of constitutionally indefensible Obamacare Democratcare on his salary, before and after his raise. Or are SEIU members one of the elite groups that have been exempted from Democratcare?

Otherwise, the important thing concerning this SEIU-negotiated raise is that it wasn't legislatively forced by the federal government. This is because the states have never delegated to Congress, expressly via the Constitution, the specific power to regulate intrastate labor.

So although the long-term effects of the raise on the school's budget were probably not well-planned or ignored, let's see what happens.

I love these sad stories. The Washington Post wants sad stories? Well, there’s about seven billion sad stories. And that’s not even counting the historical sad stories.
The market will figure out what your labor is worth. Any other way is discriminatory.
You want to make more money? Figure it out. Lots of people have. They just do it and don’t become a story in the Washington Post.
I can’t afford to pay out for every sad story a liberal encounters.
