Apple Patents A Way To Make All-Glass iPhones, iPads, Monitors And TVs
TechCrunch ^ | 8 JUL 2014 | Darrell Etherington

Apple has patented a method for building devices with all-glass outer casings (via AppleInsider), by fusing pieces together for a completely seamless final look. The all-glass device casings could be used to hold the internals of an iOS device or to house a TV or monitor, too.

The all-glass structures are designed for maximum durability but also weight savings, with designs that fuse pieces together to avoid having to use a single heavy block of material, and internal structures like fused-on ribs and reinforcement points, also made of glass, placed at key points where structural integrity could be weaker.

Unlike the iPhone 4, which featured front and back glass panels, the patent would allow Apple to build completely glass-encased gadgets, which would allow for a completely different aesthetic versus other gadget-maker’s designs. An all-glass Retina Cinema Display would certainly stand out from the crowd in terms of monitors, and an all-glass iPhone would definitely draw even more headlines than usual.

Of course, glass is still subject to impact damage and other potential pitfalls. And as with many of its other patents, Apple may simply have experimented with the tech but then moved on to something else (like sapphire glass construction, for instance), but the patent does cite Apple SVP Jony Ive as one of its main inventors. Flat glass slabs are a staple of sci-fi TV and movies, after all, so maybe Apple wants to help usher that future into production.

Well, hermetically sealed personal computers/etc. is certainly a different concept.

The shell on the original one-piece MacIntosh (see #12) snapped together. I knew people with a special “Mac Cracker” tool to separate the halves. PITA, sez I. Compare to PCs, that were opened up with a #2 Philips screwdriver.

You don’t know what you are talking about. you can buy the parts on the internet in fix it yourself. Or have any phone repair booth in the mall do it. Not that hard. Same as any smart phone.

Actually it will be sapphire, not aluminum.

You know they already HAD double sided glass iphones, right? The 5th generations ones have glass on both sides. the 6th’s don’t.
I have a 5th and have dropped it plenty of times. I never use a case. It is fine.

How many tools are required to replace the battery on an Apple iPhone 5? Identify these tools. How many screws must be removed? What type of screws are they?

How many tools are required to replace the battery on a Samsung Galaxy S phone? Identify these tools. How many screws must be removed? What type of screws are they?

I know the answers to these questions. Do you?

Apple:

2 tools: a micro star screwdriver and a small plastic pry bar.
4 star screws: 2 on the connecter, and two on the battery clip. Additionally, the battery connects to the motherboard by a ribbon cable, and another ribbon cable connects the motherboard to the case. Be careful.

Samsung:

Hmmm ... is a fingernail a tool? If so, then that’s the only tool you need. No screws.

whoopty fk. I can google that in 20 seconds same as you. So what? How often have you had to open one? of either kind? Personally I replaced the battery in my ipod back when morons where whining about it not being replaceable. The one time I cracked a screen I had a co-worker do it for 50 bucks. Yeah that sounds hard. If the punk in the mall kiosk can pull it off then it isn’t that hard. So tell me since you know everything about it, how much longer does an iphone take to repair than a samsung? 10 more minutes? 15? whoopty effing do.

That is great... but 99.9% of people with the guts to open their phone have a star screwdriver and know how to google to video. So what? Why spend extra engineering to make something more repairable when it is already being repaired mostly by someone with tools? The only time I needed to crack open a small apple device it was not hard. But hey, if 4 screws make you scared then I feel sorry for you.

I don’t tinker with my toaster, refrigerator, stove, TV, DVD player, Apple TV, Roku, car or dog. I just want stuff to plug in and work. There’s too much in life to experience and not enough time to do it. Keeping things in good working order and replacing worn-out stuff is enough as it is.

Back when I had a Walkman I did not hear people bitching about how many more screws a Sony had than a Panasonic. Some people get completely deranged when it comes to trying to mock apple products.

The funny things is people that have reliable cars laugh at those with unreliable ones that they ‘can easily fix’. Repair-ability is only sometimes a top design consideration. I design avionics and we think pretty hard about when it makes sense to fix something and when you just replace it.

You miss the point.

Apple doesn’t want you in there. They never really have. And that’s OK. It’s what most of their customers want.

Samsung (in the case of phones) doesn’t care. And that’s OK too ... it makes their customers happy.

BTW, if you really, truly, need to turn your phone OFF ... yanking the battery is the only way to be sure. For some folks, that’s a practical matter. If you’re not one of them, that’s OK.

Oh, yes: Blindly throwing out accusations of “not knowing what you’re talking about” ... at people you don’t know ... is a really bad idea.
