A top Social Democrat politician on Wednesday admitted he took crystal meth, but said he only did it to improve his performance at work.
The apartment of Michael Hartmann, the interior policy expert for the centre-left SPD (Social Democrats), was searched by police last week in a drugs probe.
And on Wednesday the lawyer of the lawmaker from Mainz said his client did buy and consume a small quantity of the drug in autumn 2013.
His lawyer said he used crystal meth for around a month, but was not addicted to the drug. The lawyer said Hartmann had hoped to “improve performance” at work by taking it.
The 51-year-old had previously spoken out against using cannabis.
Hartmann stepped down as the SPD’s parliamentary spokesman for interior affairs after the allegations first came out last week, but he remains a member of parliament.
Police searched his home in Berlin after observing him buying the drug and are now investigating the case.

Would you believe a psychologist employed by state government with a “suicide hotline” run to his home who would answer it with a joint in one hand and a glass of whiskey in the other? Saw it with my own eyes almost forty years ago, it must have improved his performance, he certainly seemed very calm while talking to someone who was threatening to end it all. As far as I could tell he really didn’t give a rip one way or the other. I half expected him to say, “Take two valium and call me in the morning, if you’re still alive.”
Maybe he believed he needed the booze and pot so that the stress wouldn’t drive HIM crazy.
Well of course he thought his performance was improved.
