Driver's licenses for the undocumented: Problems still remain
San Jose Mercury ^ | David E. Early

When California legislators passed a law last year allowing undocumented immigrants to obtain driver's licenses, they seemed to think implementing the law would be straight-ahead simple.

But with less than six months to go before the Department of Motor Vehicles is supposed to start handing out the licenses, the road ahead is still serpentine and foggy -- especially for the millions of Latinos who make up the state's largest undocumented population.

In 2011, the Department of Homeland Securityreported the deportation of 35,927 illegal immigrants convicted of driving under the influence. Congressman Steve King (R-IA) asserts that illegal alien drunk drivers kill over 4,700 Americans a year — 13 U.S. citizens die every 24 hours. Another study, published by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, cited motor vehicle crashes as the single leading cause of death for Hispanics between the ages of one and 44.5 And according to an analysis by the New York Times, about 4.5 million illegal aliens in the U.S. drive on a regular basis, many without licenses or insurance, or even the ability to read road signs written in English

Maryland Dems under O Malley came up with special drivers licenses for illegals that cannot be used as a federal ID.

That way they don’t need proof of who they are to get them, required for federal IDs(airlines).

Of course using an ID that identifies that you are illegal has its risks in the long run.

I been wondering about men who have their licenses suspended for back child support payments in Maryland, seems they could take advantage of the illegal driver license program.

Right, and having a drivers license that indicates you are not a legal citizen is discrimination, but waiving the rules for illegals is not. I am so tired of this.

The goal is to register them to vote via the motor voter law and to question them being put on the voting rolls will be considered racist.
The democrats are following the same template that labor did in Britain. Can’t get the voters to go along with socialism? Import voters who will!

They will continue to come because south of the border countries enable them. It's a win for them to rid themselves of THEIR poor.

American companies will continue to hire them because as illegals they work DIRT CHEAP. It the heat gets too high they simply vanish. They are now sophisticated with networks of workers and cell phones. The illegals hang out at the same place every day and the hiring companies know where to go to pick up all the illegals ("day workers") they need.

They aren't dedicated to staying here, just to send BILLIONS of $$$ home to feed their own.

They would have NO jobs for these illegals if American workers would clean toilets, pick produce and wash dishes.
It's the same old story of SUPPLY AND DEMAND.

Ah excuse me, there’s something called an International Driver’s License.

People traveling, doing business, or site-seeing in a foreign country can easily obtain one, using their regular license. Google it.

The fact that GOP isn’t pointing this out is alarming....

Against the law (therefore unconstitutional)...against the American people.. Unpatriotic...

This country is truly screwed up!

The ball is in our court. We the people will just have to wait until 2016 and put up a WINNABLE candidate.
I WON'T vote for Romney. I didn't before. I THREW AWAY my vote rather than vote for the Mormon. Yes, faith won over politics.

It’s past time to repeal the Motor Voter Fraud Act.

When they hit the roads and cause massive amounts of wrecks and kill American citizens because they can’t read the signs-you know like “one way” signs, then what are these idiots that support this going to do?

Simple solution.

Just print the licenses on milk cartons and cereal boxes.

These licenses are just as useful.

Will they have to take the extensive drivers ed courses like we and our kids all had to do? If they don’t, then we don’t. Simple as that. We have to have proof of insurance for everything regarding our cars, will they? If they don’t then why should we?

I agree with you 100%.

SOMETIMES a foreign driver's license is good here. Perhaps a Mexican driver's license is good here. I' not sure. Maybe those guys HAD a legal driver's license from Mexico that they used here.

I am NOT sure about the insurance issue.
