PA hopes ceasefire will yield restart of peace talks
The Times of Israel ^ | Monday, July 14, 2014 | Avi Issacharoff and Elhanan Miller

The Palestinian Authority is trying to promote the idea of convening an international peace summit between the Israelis and the Palestinians that would take place in conjunction with a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip

The PA is requesting that a ceasefire agreement provide not only for the cessation of hostilities, but also include a number of measures that would restart the stalled peace process, senior Palestinian officials told The Times of Israel on Monday.

Aside from convening an international summit that would include representatives from the PA, Israel, Arab states and other actors, the Palestinian proposal includes a number of other provisions: transferring authority over the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt to the PA (specifically President Mahmoud Abbas’s presidential guard); deploying PA forces along the Philadelphi Route on the border between the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsula (from which Israel withdrew in September 2005, and which has since been under the control of the Egyptian army); releasing those Hamas members (approximately 50) who were re-arrested by Israeli security forces in recent weeks after being released in the 2011 prisoner exchange deal to free kidnapped IDF soldier Gilad Shalit; and increasing Palestinian control of the Erez Crossing between Israel and the northern Gaza Strip.

The PA is concerned that a ceasefire deal that does not stipulate the renewal of the peace process will harm the chances of resuming negotiations in the future, which explains the numerous messages relayed between Ramallah and those states involved in negotiating a ceasefire, including the US, Egypt and Qatar.

It was my understanding that Hamas was part of the ruling government in the Palestinian territories. Thus the P.A. is essentially the same thing.

Perhaps Hamas has a better grip on power in Gaza. That could be true...

The antichrist is coming, but I would say not for a while yet. So, in the meantime, we’ve got more of the above ... with Abbas ... :-) ...

Ahh the perennial peace process. Always so productive with the Palestinians.

Israel: “We want peace, stop lobbing missiles at our citizens.”
PA: “Death to Israel, Death to Jews”

No ... it’s pretty much this way ... Hamas in Gaza, the Palestinian Authority in Judea and Samaria (i.e., the Westbank). The P.A. and Hamas are deadly enemies; they kill each other. Hamas gained control over Gaza a while back and kicked the PA out of there.

Even Egypt recognizes that the PA and Hamas are different. Egypt wants Abbas and the PA to control the Gaza/Egypt border and NOT Hamas. Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood have worked together, and Egypt wants nothing to do with either of them.

In the beginning when Hamas was first formed, Israel actually supported Hamas (under the surface) in order to provide an offset to Arafat and the PLO (the forerunner to the PA).

We’ll, I’ve always thought the Rapture was coming in my lifetime, and I’ve thought that way for at least over 50 years now. HOWEVER, I’m running out of “lifetime” ... :-) ...

I understand this may not be the time or place for it, but shouldn’t there be a Christian nation in the Middle East. How can their be a comprehensive settlement without addressing the formation of a separate Christian nation-state in the Holy Land or elsewhere?

PA (otherwise known as the PLO terrorist gang all pumped up with American money and weapons and military training so it could kill more damnedJooos) — Now, a totally irrelevant footnote, just an historical abberation of no consequence to today or tomorrow’s world

I know what the Bible says about the comprehensive peace plan that is coming and will settle everything finally ... but I really don’t know what you might be referring to, in regards to a Christian nation. You’ve got me on that one ...

Well ... keep in mind that when you talk about the PA, you got a twenty year history of Israel and the PA signing agreements, changing things “on the ground”, giving control to the PA gradually and in phased steps - so it has been “on-going” for quite a while.

And one thing one has to remember about this is that it’s Israel itself who wants the Palestinian State to be formed - more so than anyone else. That because Israel wants to keep those millions of Palestinians out of Israel proper, in order to keep Israel as the homeland for the Jews. Right now there are 80% Jews and 20% Arabs in Israel, and Israel doesn’t want that percentage any higher. They want to keep those Arabs INSIDE their own Palestinian State and not have Israel take over all that land and have them all inside Israel (turning it into an ARAB state).

One more thing you should know ... it’s that Israel (and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu) actually wants the Palestinian Authority in place, where it is (in Judea and Samaria) in order to be in control of the civilian population. Israel definitely DOES NOT WANT its soldiers doing that duty in those territories. That’s why Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has lobbied, in the past, for Congress to keep approving funds to the PA in order for it to carry out those duties. Israel actually “wants them there.”

that strategy, if you will, has proven unsuccessful. over and over and over again. and over again, again.

Israel’s government, or perhaps the next Israeli government, will need to adopt a more successful strategy than trying to keep a group of IslamoNazi squatters living inside the land of Israel in the hope that they will suddenly, or even gradually, transform into a peaceful civilized population

What would be 100% unsuccessful! without any doubt is having Israel incorporate that land into “Israel proper” as that would IMMEDIATELY change the demographic of Israel to an ARAB NATION.

That’s not the solution Israel is looking for ... :-) ...

No, Israel will retake its territory and the Arabs will live in Arab countries, instead.
There is no logic for Israel to let them remain in Israel.
And there is no logic other than attempted usurpation and continued terrorist bombings and attacks for them be permitted to remain there.

There are two problems with that ... one of which is that one can’t force another country to take people in, when they don’t want to. And it’s been made clear that they don’t want to.

The other problem is that any country who forces any mass migration of a population out of an area in their military control is committing a war crime.

Well, contrary to the LIES that say Israel commits war crimes ... it doesn’t ... by its own laws, it’s own pronouncements and declarations and by its own actions,

In addition to the above, Israel has already entered into peace treaties with Jordan and Israel in which they have committed to recognizing these Palestinians in these territories - PLUS - the legal documents and treaties they’ve signed and agreed to through all their governments and Prime Ministers for the last twenty years committing Israel to coming to a final agreement forming a Palestinian State.

You’re a bit “out of date” with the legal documents and treaties that Israel has “committed itself to” ... I would say about 20+ years “out of date” ... :-) ...

we will see what transpires.

inho, all your hopes for past “legal documents” and concerns that Israel may be driven to commit what you believe would be a “war crime”.... are well-founded, but not very likely to determine the future. The future will be determined by Israel’s defense needs, and the Islamics have proven, over and over again, that they intend to continue their thousands and thousands of bombings and murderious terrorist attacks...including the perversion, if you will, or conversion of heart-of-Israel high-hill-ground areas Israel tried to give them... into rocket-launching terror nests. So, Israel giving her enemy land for peace has proven a failed policy. “Legal documents” predicated on that failed objective will not stand in the way now of Israel defending herself. After Israel (hopefully, if she’s finally learned the lesson of history) neutralizes her enemies, she can discuss “legal documents” and other such matters.

We live in a real world. Not one where one party can give away the heart of its homeland “for peace’ and then be expected to honor that arrangement when the other party fails to honor it....and instead amasses over 100,000 missiles and bombs with which to further threaten, terrorize, and attack Israel. That dog won’t hunt anyore.

Yep. Sounds like Israel is winning.

I say Israel keep on till they surrender and withdraw all demands for a cease fire.
