PA hopes ceasefire will yield restart of peace talks
The Times of Israel ^ | Monday, July 14, 2014 | Avi Issacharoff and Elhanan Miller

The Palestinian Authority is trying to promote the idea of convening an international peace summit between the Israelis and the Palestinians that would take place in conjunction with a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip

The PA is requesting that a ceasefire agreement provide not only for the cessation of hostilities, but also include a number of measures that would restart the stalled peace process, senior Palestinian officials told The Times of Israel on Monday.

Aside from convening an international summit that would include representatives from the PA, Israel, Arab states and other actors, the Palestinian proposal includes a number of other provisions: transferring authority over the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt to the PA (specifically President Mahmoud Abbas’s presidential guard); deploying PA forces along the Philadelphi Route on the border between the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsula (from which Israel withdrew in September 2005, and which has since been under the control of the Egyptian army); releasing those Hamas members (approximately 50) who were re-arrested by Israeli security forces in recent weeks after being released in the 2011 prisoner exchange deal to free kidnapped IDF soldier Gilad Shalit; and increasing Palestinian control of the Erez Crossing between Israel and the northern Gaza Strip.

The PA is concerned that a ceasefire deal that does not stipulate the renewal of the peace process will harm the chances of resuming negotiations in the future, which explains the numerous messages relayed between Ramallah and those states involved in negotiating a ceasefire, including the US, Egypt and Qatar.

Well ... the Palestinian Authority has no leverage other than to throw in the "kitchen sink" ... so to speak. The only problem with their "move" on this is that it's been the Palestinian Authority itself (and not Israel) who has been stalling on entering into negotiations. They have thrown one roadblock after another down in order to stall the process, while Israel has been anxious to proceed. It sounds like a "ploy" by Abbas, more than anything else.

How times will they go on the offensive, then sue for peace?

I’ve had enough of these peace talks.

Same here. It ends when every PA target has been taken out.

Sucks to be them...

It’s about time!

There will never be peace in the Middle East until Israel eradicates Palestine

Well, actually it was Hamas (in Gaza) that went on the attack and it’s Abbas of the Palestinian Authority who is talking about this. Hamas won’t even mention any “peace process” ... :-) ...

A cease-fire has always happened, before, so that’s a foregone conclusion. And another item here is that it’s Abbas from the Palestinian Authority who is talking, while Israel is fighting Hamas in Gaza, which is a different entity,

Israel has an on-going dialogue with the Palestinian Authority but it doesn’t with Hamas.

Well, actually, it is a bunch of whiney Arab terrorists.

Hamas, no matter they say, is an insourced agency of the larger Arab cabal...

If Hamas is an outside actor, then how would peace talks affect anything?

Does Abbas speak on behalf, as a proxy, for Hamas?

If PA were ever to succesfuly sue and achieve peace would Hamas or any other upstart organization of goat fkrs ever end their tireless charade and attacks?

Would PA, if it were a recognized fauxny state, ever go after Hamas to keep peace and order.

Bunk

“Restart the Peace Process” == “We need to recoup our damages and restock our weapons”

Well Israel will never eliminate the Palestinians or the land in which they live - because Israel actually NEEDS to have the Palestinians have a “separate country” in order to keep them out of Israel proper.

If Israel took over all that land they are on now, Israel would INSTANTLY BECOME AN ARAB COUNTRY just on the basis of population, and the Jews would be in a minority.

SO ... you see ... Israel needs to have a “Palestinian State” in order to keep Israel as the “homeland for the Jews” (they’ve already got 20% of the population as ARAB citizens inside Israel, as it is right now).

Abbas and the Palestinian Authority have never launched any rockets into Israel, and that’s why Israel wants to keep Hamas out of the PA territories.

Those rockets come from Hamas and Gaza.

Well ... I hope you do know that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has lobbied our Congress to keep funds flowing to the P.A. too ... :-) ...

But, there is E.U. money going to the P.A. also.

It’s not “P.A. targets” that are being taken out ... it’s Hamas targets in Gaza that are being taken out. The tanks are not lined up around the P.A. territories, but they are lined up next to Gaza.

Exactly. It is like the land they want Israel to give back. They start a war, lose land and then after they lose they want it back.
