Martin Luther King dreamed that one day his children would "be judged on the basis of the content of their character, not the color of their skin." This week, the current head of the Justice Department said that "given the disparities that still afflict and divide us," that dream will have to wait.
Eric Holder addressed an audience at Howard University Tuesday as part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act. After recounting the horrific struggles of the civil rights movement and heroic efforts of many who fought to extend those rights to all races, Holder suggested, as is his wont in such speeches, that "significant challenges remain" and there is "a great deal more to do." He went on:
As it stands, our society is not yet colorblind; nor should it be, given the disparities that still afflict and divide us. We must be color brave and must never forget that all are made better and more prosperous if all are given equal opportunities...

I do not like that "we" language. You assume that all of Free Republic is white, which is not the case.
There can be speculation on what anyone's true motives are. For me, it pretty much resolves back to content of character.
I recognize in myself the ability and tendency to make excuses for myself. I cannot say, with any degree of certainty, that if I were a black man, I would not rely on my color to excuse my own failings.
I hope and pray that I would not. I would hope that my parents had instilled in me the precepts of character that form a man fit to live in a free society. At the top of the list is taking responsibility for my own actions and refusing to allow others to define who I am.
Nailed it. I bet somebody picks that up while perusing FR for their show prep today. Let's keep our ears open.
Just like B0 Dunhamsoetorosoebarkah, Holder has no connection to US slave ancestors.
“hed be back in an island shantytown where he came from.”
His parents came from Barbados. He was born in NY.
“Move the Zimbabwe if you wanna feel comfy.”
He’s not dark enough to be accepted in Zimbabwe.
Lead by example, Holder!
(as if that will ever happen)
Some FReeper predicted that when the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights rolled around, there’d be all this talk by libs about “We have made progress, but more must be done” type of speeches.
IMHO, Holder is a POS.
Oh, that "we've come a long way, BUT" speech has been routine all along. I don't know how many times I've heard it.
I watched a bit of Newsmax TV this morning. They showed a clip of blacks in (I think) Chicago. One older man said that black people's situation today is the same as it was during slavery.
Derrick won’t be happy until every slightly-black person is given forty acres and a white slave.
It is most unfortunate that we have a racist Attorney General.
Yes Mr. Holder - Let’s discuss violent crime.
Holder is a racist - just like Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton etc. His next job with a “non-profit” will be to promote reparations and the like. He’s just not comfortable in his own skin s he blames whitey for everything.
“Color-brave” - Liberal code word for “racist”, judging people by their skin.
Want “color-brave”? OK, I’ll be brave and just say it: Blacks cannot live without white man’s money but hate white men.
Let’s discuss the bastardity rate...
which leads to all the other dysfunction in the “urban community”.
A War On Whites is exactly is what’s going on in this country. We should capitalize that phrase and repeat the truth of it incessantly in the ears of liberals until they get as sick of it as we are of their claims which are based on lies.
Does that mean I can wear my :”Proud TO BE WHITE” T shirt?
Maybe it should be copyrighted or trademarked, as “War on Whites (TM)”. Or a hashtag #WarOnWhitey.
Hey Holder, “Brave” is a derogatory term for Redskin, you racist.
Haha thanks — his little “color brave” riff was begging for a pithy retort.
At the top of the list is taking responsibility for my own actions and refusing to allow others to define who I am.
First off, sorry if it sounded like I thought all of FR is white; I really don’t care about skin color, Holder is obsessed with it though. I totally agree with your sentiments. This administration not only doesn’t seem to care about character; but seems to be a war with it.
