Still, When you look at a map of the world, you’ll see that any flights going form Europe to Southeast Asia would fly over or close to the Ukraine. And for Malaysia Air in particular, flying direct saves on avgas, which saves a lot of money, which is what they don’t have enough of, given the flight that disappeared.
One outcome of this will probably be that Malaysia airlines will go out of business. I mean, would anyone want to fly on them after both of these incidents?
And while the disappearance of MH370 is odd and unsolved, yesterday’s incident now seems sadly destined to happen, given the factors of a war, Russians* using sophisticated missile systems to shoot down Ukrainian Air Force cargo planes, and 300 flights a day in their skies.
*By Russians, I mean Russian-speaking Ukrainians, even if a great deal of the rebel fighters allied with them were, until recently, soldiers in the Russian Army.
If this was the only flight that day it would be a great question; but it is not.
The Daily Mail, UK, has an article that says there are 300 flights over the Ukraine on a DAILY basis. Your map shows none of them, and if any actually flew over that part of the Ukraine, but with 300 a day, I’m sure there were probably a few.
The reason to fly over this airspace is very apparent when one looks at a world map. The direction from a Northern European airport to Kuala Lampur or Singapore takes the flight over Southeastern Ukraine. Direct flights save a lot of avgas, which cost the airlines money. There was no doubt a financial imperative to save avgas for this cash-strapped airline. Well, now there is a financial imperative to avoid that airspace. For whatever reason (probably money again), the airlines thought that flying at at least 10KM (34,000 ft) would be safe even over a civil war.
The rebels had to have gotten the codes to fire that missile and previous missiles, Putin again.

If an SA-11 Tactical Surface to Air Missile system shot at anything, anywhere on this earth, we, as in the USA, know who did it, and we know exactly where and when it was launched.
So does every nation in NATO.
As does every government in the entire world, with the possible exceptions of many in Africa and South America.

Re-naming the very well known TACSAM weapon system the “BRUK” is a rather feeble way to make it seem mysterious and hard to track.

At the altitude they were flying, one could argue it would be unreasonable and illogical to expect any SAM weapon system capable of shooting them down, were also incapable of identifying them as a commercial airline, and hense not a threat.
Russian terrorists in Ukraine drunkenly played with some seriously dangerous big-boy toys, provided to them by Putin.
Expect more of this type of stupidity worldwide.
