Before there is any further discussion of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, its important that one point be made absolutely clear: This plane crash is a result of the Russian invasion of eastern Ukraine, an operation deliberately designed to create legal, political and military chaos. Without this chaos, a surface-to-air missile would not have been fired at a passenger plane.
From the beginning, the Russian government did not send regular soldiers to Ukraine. Instead, it sent Russian mercenaries and security service operatives such as Igor Strelkov the commander in chief in Donetsk and a Russian secret police colonel who fought in both Chechen wars and Vladimir Antyufeyev, the Donetsk deputy prime minister who led the Latvian KGBs attempt to overthrow the independent Latvian government in 1991.
Anne Applebaum writes a biweekly foreign affairs column for The Washington Post. She is also the Director of the Global Transitions Program at the Legatum Institute in London.
With the help of local thugs, these Russian security men besieged police stations, government offices and other symbols of political authority to delegitimize the Ukrainian state. In this task, they were assisted by the Russian government and by Russias state-controlled mass media, both of which still constantly denigrate Ukraine and its Nazi government. Just in the past week, Russian reporting on Ukraine reached a new pitch of hysteria, with fake stories about the supposed crucifixion of a child and an extraordinary documentary comparing the Ukrainian armys defense of its own country with the Rwandan genocide.
Into this ambiguous and unstable situation, the Russians cynically funneled a stream of heavy weapons: machine guns and artillery and, eventually, tanks, armed personnel carriers and anti-aircraft missiles. In recent days, the separatist forces were openly using man-portable air-defense systems (MANPADS)

It sounds like Mz Appelbaum has been reading FR.
Yay Post! Rah rah rah ...
Ms. Applebaum has written two excellent books. One was on the Gulag and the other was about the Cold War. She’s a straight shooter. I’m sure she’ll be bashed by the Putinista wing, but stating the truth cannot be popular with those who support a former KGB thug turned ultra-nationalist gangster statesman. She nails Putin in this article. All he has to do is stopping supporting the Russian terrorists in Ukraine. Bet you that won’t happen.

Another post on Putin further along in the data stream mentioned that he would be feeling guilt and shame. Assuming they are capable of feeling guilt and shame and aren’t sociopaths leaders like Putin don’t internalize emotions from the results of their actions. They see themselves not as mere men but as the personification of the state. They act, or think they act, for the betterment of the state. They rationalize their acts which result in death as necessary to any large enterprise. And there will be deaths and unintended consequences to any state-sized act no matter the intention. Years ago in the US planning for any large construction or military exercise was accompanied by an actuarial guide predicting the deaths that would be involved. (These were usually accurate.) So, a peacetime deployment of 20,000 men on a training exercise that last two weeks might predict 2-4 deaths. This practice was stopped as it had poor political optics.
One man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter.
How quickly we forget the “fascist terrorists” backed by the EU and USA who prodded and persuaded them to overthrow the previous government because they did a deal with the Kremlin instead of Brussels.
They overthrew the legally elected Government, no probs there for the “we love democracy “ USa and EU, but when the pro Russian faction says we don’t wanna be with you and Russia naturally backs em up,
Whoa!!
They are terrorists against democracy,
How dare Putin give em Support.
They stand there screaming, Putin gave them weapons, whilst it was they who armed ISIS so they could slaughter Shia, Christians and anybody they don’t like in Iraq.
All Hypocrites.
You got that right!
The poster you responded to is correct.
“The poster you responded to is correct.”
I did not disagree with the poster. I believe Putin will continue on his present course. I was, I hope, providing the rationale that Putin is using.
It didn't crash. That would imply a malfunction of some kind. It was shot down.
It amazes me how everyone quickly latched onto the improper terms "tragedy" (it was an intentional shooting, not an accident of nature or a misunderstanding), "crash" (it was shot down... or does a deer simply "collapse" after being shot?), and "event" (as if someone was selling tickets... this was a military group firing advanced military weaponry at a civilian airplane that could not possibly have been mistaken for anything else).
You did.
Hypocrites.................Is SO 20th Century! SARC!
The press is chained to a style book. Reality or accuracy does not trump the style book
Thank you for link.
As I have posted elsewhere on FR, in all fairness:
There is a difference between Soviets & Russians which the Russians speak of themselves.
The evil seen occuring in Ukraine, is Soviet aggression. That is beyond danger: EVIL
quote “This plane crash is a result of the Russian invasion of eastern Ukraine, an operation deliberately designed to create legal, political and military chaos. Without this chaos, a surface-to-air missile would not have been fired at a passenger plane”
um... no.
This crash is a result of the violent overthrow of the democratically elected president of Ukraine by a bunch of terrorist thugs trying to push sodomy and socialism on Ukraine.
Not so. "Terrorist" is defined by his methods; "freedom fighter" is defined by his objectives. For a freedom fighter to use terror is to betray his objectives.
It seems their are very differing opinions on waht freedom really is.
We seem to be having this problem in America. People have confused freedom with democracy. Democracy without freedom is a sham.
