A Los Angeles man was one of the Israeli soldiers killed in Gaza this weekend as fighting intensified.
Max Steinberg was a Woodland Hills native and voluntarily joined the Israel Defense Forces, according to the Jewish Journal. According to voter records, he was 24 years old.
Steinberg graduated from El Camino Real high school in 2008, studied at Pierce College, joined the Israeli army in 2012 and was a sharpshooter in the Golani Brigade, his Facebook page says.
It was unclear exactly how Steinberg died, but the Israeli military announced Sunday that 13 members of the Golani Brigade were killed by militants this weekend in the northern Gaza Strip. Seven of them died when an explosive device hit an armored vehicle, one in a firefight, two in a separate attack and three in a burning building, the Israel Defense Forces said.

Steinberg apparently had not become an Israeli citizen. The other American killed held dual citizenship.

My daughter knows two high school classmates who have left to join the IDF. I guess it is not THAT uncommon.
Sort of. A lot of ‘Americans’ are fighting alongside their Muslim terrorist brothers around the world.
World Wars I & II found many young Americans joining up with French and British Commonwealth militaries before the US entered the wars.
Whether one is distressed by the practice depends on whether one sees a shared enemy, I suppose.
Probably more self esteem then with are guy in charge.
Just doesn’t seem like a legit practice to me. If they want to fight, they should join our military. If they want to fight for a foreign nation, they should give up their citizenship and become a citizen of that nation.
It’s legal to fight with another nation’s forces, provided that nation is not fighting the US.
The Lafayette Escadrille of WWI comes to mind;
and Americans in the RAF; the Flying Tigers in China;
etc.

Only among Jewish and Muslim Americans. Thousands of American Jews join the IDF. And hundreds of American Muslims have joined jihadist groups in Syria, Sudan, Yemen, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc.

Lots of American fought for the Communists in the Spanish Civil War, and several fought for the Fascists.
Israel seems to be a special case, as many Israeli’s hold dual US-Israel citizenships.
This young man probably wanted to be on the winning team for a change. America doesn’t do victory anymore.

Dual citizenship only applies to the other country involved; they may not force you to give up your citizenship if you take US citizenship. If an American takes any other citizenship, our government recognizes them as a foreign national of that country (they are no longer a US citizen). I have in-laws that are dual citizens, but only in the eyes of the “other country”.
