WHO: Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) Could Be Airborne

In a scientific paper published Tuesday, scientists suggested that Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) may be airborne. The disease has already claimed at least 288 lives since its appearance in 2012.

Researchers at King Fahd Medical Research Center in Saudi Arabia analyzed air samples from an infected camel barn, and the samples tested positive for a strain of the viral genome MERS RNA, CNN reports. The possibility of MERS being airborne has been in question after reports found that some infected people had close contact with other MERS patients. The WHO recommends that "airborne precautions should be applied" when treating MERS, in case the disease may spread through air particles.

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

I have a hard time seeing a downside to a disease that kills Muslims on the Hadj

Except that we have already had several cases in this country...
But what is astounding is that it has been determined a respiratory virus may be airborne. Shocking!!! I’m so glad that captain obvious is now doing medical research.....

That’s right because we couldn’t possibly be blaming folks in the middle east of getting and spreading this camel borne disease by kissing them

The ‘cases’ (two total) in this country were all contracted in the middle east and brought here

I’m aware of that. But in this day and age it is foolish to say an outbreak in the middle east will stay there and not affect the rest of the world. Populations are mobile enough and air travel is the perfect way to spread diseases.

Since the only cases even in camel land are in those who have close contact with camels and a lack of 20th century medicine....

This is why Obama ordered the FAA to stop flights to Israel. It’s an airborne virus. Surely I don’t have to say I’m joking.

Maybe that's why Russia is shooting down airliners.
Humanitarian purposes, of course, I'm sure, yeah, right!

Do I even need a </sarc> tag?

Illegals being flown around the country before being checked for diseases. Major disease outbreak right before elections... Wouldn’t surprise anyone...

You are right. Just like HIV that was confined to people who had contact with certain monkey populations in Africa. We have nothing to worry about. Silly me.

and are you planning on having anal sex with a carrier anytime soon? HIV was spread by homosexuals and drug users. It was and is an entirely preventable disease. It is not air borne. You are comparing entirely different classes of disease.

Apparently you do not understand that MERS when treated with 20th century (let alone 21st century) medicine is treatable and does not kill people. The deaths are occurring in those who do not receive modern medical treatment.

And yes silly you for making such a ridiculous argument
