Tale of the Tapes: IRS head confirms investigators have found backup tapes in Lerner probe
Fox News ^ | 23 Jul 2014

Posted on 07/23/2014 10:26:47 AM PDT by mandaladon

The head of the IRS confirmed Wednesday that investigators looking into missing emails from ex-agency official Lois Lerner have found and are reviewing "backup tapes" -- despite earlier IRS claims that the tapes had been recycled.

IRS Commissioner John Koskinen, testifying before a House oversight subcommittee, stressed that he does not know "how they found them" or "whether there's anything on them or not." But he said the inspector general's office advised him the investigators are reviewing tapes to see if they contain any "recoverable" material.

The revelation is significant because the IRS claimed, when the agency first told Congress about the missing emails, that backup tapes "no longer exist because they have been recycled."

It is unclear whether the tapes in IG custody contain any Lerner emails, but Koskinen said investigators are now checking.

Republicans on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee first raised questions about the backup tapes on Monday, releasing a partial transcript from an interview with IRS official Thomas Kane. In it, Kane said "there is an issue" as to whether all the backup tapes were destroyed. Asked if they might still exist, he said he didn't know but "it's an issue that's being looked at."

Taping system as related by Wikipedia

"When Nixon was re-elected, Butterfield was appointed on December 19, 1972 as administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration. He was routinely asked to appear before the United States Senate Select Committee headed by Sam Ervin and was interviewed by staff of the committee on July 13, 1973, prior to going before the Senators. John Dean had previously mentioned that he suspected White House conversations were taped, and the committee was therefore routinely asking witnesses about it. Butterfield did not want to voluntarily tell the committee of the system, but had decided before the hearing that he would, if asked a direct question."

"As it happened, Butterfield was asked the direct question by the minority (Republican) counsel, Donald Sanders. He told the staff members that "everything was taped ... as long as the President was in attendance. There was not so much as a hint that something should not be taped."[3] All present recognized the significance of this disclosure, and Butterfield was hastily put before the full Committee on July 16 to put the taping system on the record. Chief Minority Counsel, Fred Thompson, notably asked "Mr. Butterfield, are you aware of the installation of any listening devices in the Oval Office of the president?"

Won’t it be great to play Elijah’s words over screen shot of an email implicating him in the IRS scandal?

Right! But worshiping cows and other animals is a well know part of the Hindu religion. Don’t worry about it. I was just being silly because this whole disgusting scenario is enough to gag a Hindu maggot!!!

No, they don't.

In Hinduism, the cow is revered as the source of food and symbol of life and may never be killed. However, many non-Hindus interpret these beliefs to mean that Hindus worship cows. This is not true. It is more accurate to say the cow is taboo in the Hindu religion, rather than sacred. This is just one example of the misunderstandings people have about the Hindu faith.

Furthermore, cows do not have an especially charmed life in India. Sometimes people around the world see images of India in print or on television, or they travel there, and see cows in public places, unfenced and unrestrained. From such scenes, they conclude that Indians consider cows gods, but this is a false idea

More like, watch for a statement that will reveal nothing illegal took place, no concerted effort to target anyone......just Lois and her employees trading casserole recipes and office banter.

They are still busy writing those emails now — the emails that will exonerate Lerner and make her accusers look stupid.

Exactly. But they won't be able to stop with just exculpatory text. They'll give themselves away by having to get in something a little extra. And where have we seen that before?

The public will never believe the innocence of the Clintons and their loyal staff....

This guy just cannot seem to keep his story straight. Whomever he is relying upon for information should be fired as they are making Koskinen look like an overpaid idiot.

Good find. What Wikipedia doesn’t tell you is that former FBI agent Don Sanders was one of the biggest egotistical pricks in government.

He wore a vest at work and tried to look like actor George Sanders or James Mason.

Of all the FBI agents I either worked with or knew, Sanders and his boss at the old House Internal Security Committee were the worst re their inflated egos and prima donna behavior.(Had to bitchslap his boss once because he screwed up the work of his undercover operative, who was also working for me. That was fun!)

They were not liked by other HISC staffers which included some very nice gentlemen who were also former government agency investigators. I’m proud to say that most of the govt investigators I either worked with or knew were real professionals, gentlemen, and competent. Can’t say that today!

So who is doing the investigating?

"At this point, What difference does it make?"

Seriously, they have had time to rewrite the Administration's entire communication history. Nothing damning will be found, especially at the highest levels.

We will find that instead of containing the missing emails, they are filled with episodes of the groundbreaking television NBC series, “Punky Brewster.”

Shades of Rose Billing records that magically appeared in the White House on some desk during the Clinton years.

Yeah, now that SOMEONE has to pony up an answer under oath before a judge who might just throw 10 yrs of prison time at the IRS staff, suddenly the drive is only ‘scratched’ and *POOF* wait! We have found some of the tapes! HALLELUJAH!!! Praise the Lord! We found the backup tapes!!!

So who is doing the investigating?

A federal judge who doesn't have to wait around for 6 months to get the answers he requires. He can say, "Baliff, whack his peepee!" And hit the prison time button instantly.

Whole different ballgame than being in front of a neutered Congress.
