DOD to provide space for 5,000 more migrant children until next year

WASHINGTON — The U.S. military will provide housing space for up to an additional 5,000 unaccompanied Central American children who have illegally come across the border, Pentagon spokesman Col. Steve Warren said Wednesday.

Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel signed the authorization last week at the request of the Department of Health and Human Services.

Hagel’s order also extends the housing assistance mission to Jan. 31, 2015. In May, the Pentagon committed to providing space to up to 3,600 children for 120 days. There are 2,500 children being housed at Fort Sill, Okla., Naval Base Ventura County, Calif., and Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, according to Warren.

The Defense Department has not selected the bases where the additional 5,000 might be placed.

“We have not determined where these additional 5,000 spaces will come from. We are conducting assessments now to determine where we can best handle this influx of capacity ... There’s a fairly extensive list of possible locations,” Warren said.

DOD has not yet authorized space to be provided at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash., Warren said. JBLM has been rumored to be a fourth potential housing location that the Pentagon is considering.

DOD is not directly involved in caring for the children. The department is merely providing unused space on military bases to be used by HHS. The Pentagon will be reimbursed by DHHS for any expenses incurred in the housing assistance mission, according to officials.

The Obama administration has said that it intends to repatriate the unaccompanied children to their home countries eventually.

On Capitol Hill Wednesday, House Republicans moved to slash President Barack Obama’s emergency spending request for the U.S.-Mexican border, speed young migrants back home to Central America, and send National Guard troops.

The proposals Wednesday amounted to a rebuke of Obama’s proposed solution to the crisis on the border. They put the House on a collision course with the Democratic-run Senate, and increased the likelihood that congressional efforts to address the crisis on the border, where unaccompanied young people have been showing up by the tens of thousands, will end in stalemate. There is little time to resolve it because Congress’ annual August recess is just around the corner.

More than 57,000 minors have arrived since October, mostly from El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala.

A 2008 law guarantees them judicial hearings, which in practice allows them to stay in this country for years — before any deportation can be carried out — because of major backlogs in the immigration court system.

Must be BIG reasons Homeland's keeping the press out... considering the press loves democrats and covers for them whenever possible... those kids might be in dangers.

Under the Moslem Impostor, NASA’s sole goal is to
help Moslem esteem;
and now the DOD will house the terrorists coming in.

Will ONLY the terrorists be armed, like with Hasan
(Obama’s inauguration present)?

Will the terrorists be given access to nukes, or
just smaller weapons?

Since the terrorists are given healthcare before
veterans, will that continue at the bases?

Whose side is the DOD on? The American people
or the Impostor from Indonesia?

It makes me think of an invading army passing through Poland, entering the Soviet Union and being met by Stalin's troops with hot towels, croissants, and comfy beds.

We're being invaded folks. And our military is charged with making the people feel welcome. It's unbelievable.

How come nobody ever brings this up?

During the last Govt shutdown about 70-80% of employees were sent home; “non-essential”. If this is a ‘crisis’ how about we send THEM to the border to babysit these kids?

These Government Officers should also put up these children with the MS-13 tattoos in THEIR paid-for-by-taxpayers homes on the Potomac.

Jorge Bush left the nation a rancid legacy when he signed that 2008 bill guaranteeing immigration lawyers and hearings to illegal minors. Obama knew exactly what to a do with that amnesty bill and ran with it. The results will be a problem for the nation for decades.

Enlist these MS-13 thugs as separate units within our military, then ship them off to Iraq to fight ISIS. That’s what I’D DO.

This has been a major concern of mine.
We are talking the equivalent of a mid sized city’s worth of people, and this administration can’t manage a small office, much less a city full of food, sewage, feminine supplies... (what is that meme about malevolence and incompetence being indistinguishable at a certain point?)

It seems as likely that they are not allowing anyone to see what is going on because they are totally blowing it as it is that they don’t want us to see that the vast majority of these youngsters are teen gang-bangers and not little children.

I fear we may eventually find that we have officially sponsored concentration camps on our hands.

Any thoughts, jrandom? Seems you have made comments here and there about being in logistics. Think their diaspora is hiding the supply chain, or do you think they are totally blowing it?

And if they continue as they have, once they clear one bed—releasing someone on his promise to appear for hearing—we’re going to have five bodies wanting that empty bed and three meals @ day.
And Congress doesn’t do a damned thing. I will work to replace my gopee representative.

I regularly criticized President Bush for his actions on immigration- but that law is being absolutely misused. The intent of that law was to protect children brought here against their will for sex trafficking. It may have been written funny, I have not studied it but several attorneys said only a handful of children qualify when the law is applied correctly.

The law is being used to keep the children from being deported immediately as I understand it. They are to have their day in court and if they cannot provide evidence that their facts fit the law they should be deported. The problem is rarely do they show up in court, and no one looks for them.
