Bismarck on the Potomac: Obama calls for, ahem, “economic patriotism.”
National Review ^ | 07/28/2014 | The Editors

President Barack Obama, who in his political dotage is enthusiastically getting in touch with his inner Otto von Bismarck to such an extent that we half expect him to start sporting a walrus mustache and a pickelhaube, on Saturday treated the ailing republic to another lecture on the theme of “economic patriotism,” by which he means an arrangement under which companies adopt tax strategies that maximize the amount of money they send to President Obama and his colleagues to dispose of as they see fit. He demanded that companies “embrace an economic patriotism,” presumably one defined by Barack Obama, rather than “cherry-pick” their tax liabilities.

There was a time, not long ago, when questioning someone’s patriotism was considered unseemly in a political leader. For that, we may consult the wisdom of Barack Obama, who vowed in 2008 that he would “never question the patriotism of others,” and who proclaimed that “the question of who is and or is not a patriot all too often poisons our political debates.”

That was then. Now, President Obama is one-upping Charles Wilson and his de facto declaration: What’s good for Barack Obama is good for America.

Every morning the first question that enters my thoughts is “Why isn’t this bum in prison or exiled”?

Every American has the duty to pay their taxes — and the duty to owe as little taxes as legally allowed.

Hey, the massive, sprawling, Welfare State beast needs to be fed and its your patriotic duty to do so.

He means that ‘economic patriotism’ is demanding more and more free stuff from taxpayers : Obama voters.

Eventually, in the not-too-distant future, they will “call for economic patriotism” at gunpoint.

... instead of enacting a better and fairer corporate-tax regime, they chose to take the current system, already riddled with political favoritism, and lard it up with still more favoritism,

I'm retired and I look at all the "patriotic" things he's done for me. He raised my Social Security benefits .1% during his terms in office. True, welfare recipients got a 30% increase during that period, but look at their contributions to the economy versus what I did. Giving away free cell phones to deadbeats is not politically motivated, either. A look at his brilliant idea of going after the "rich fat cats" who don't pay their fair share. Yep, never mind that the top 10% income earners foot almost 70% of all Federal tax receipts, we need to punish them. He knows that it's the poor who hire people and create jobs, not those dirty fat cats. And those fat cats have the gall to take advantage of the tax loopholes Congress wrote into the tax code to keep themselves in office. Shame on them! Yep, we are so lucky to have such a brilliant leader in the White House.

Economic patriotism is when politicians assure that the tax rate is not above the point of diminishing returns.

The only economic patriots I’ve ever seen have been Republicans - and not even all of them.

Half the U.S. Population pays no federal income taxes. These people are not economic patriots.

A corporation’s job is to take care of the stockholders.
If you try to screw them, they will move, as is their right.

If you lived in Nazi Germany, you were a patriot if you supported Hitler and an anarchist/traitor if you opposed him. Bear that in mind whenever a politician blows gas about patriotism.
