Growing concern in US: 'kissing bug' disease
Fox News ^ | 7/29/2014 | Fox News

Some 8 million people have Chagas disease, a life-threatening illness passed to humans by "kissing bugs," or triatomines, living in Latin America. In the US, few people know about the disease—but the CDC figures that some 300,000 people may be infected here.

In countries like Bolivia, which has the highest rate of Chagas in the world, it's standard practice to screen expectant mothers for the disease, since they could pass it on to their children.

But in the US, doctors rarely think to check for the illness, which can cause heart or colon problems years down the line that, left untreated, can kill.

But awareness is growing, especially in places like Virginia, which one doctor suggests could be "ground zero" for the illness in the US, the Atlantic reports.

The state has more Bolivians than any other, and dozens of cases have cropped up in the region. Infants and new cases can potentially be cured, but people with chronic cases may face eventual heart failure or brain inflammation.

The insect is called the “kissing bug”. As far as I can tell from the article the disease isn’t contagious but is spread through this insect, although the article said that pregnant mothers can pass it on to their babies in the womb.

I wonder if that insect is being brought in with the Latinos who come here. I wonder if the bug has to bite somebody with the disease and then bite another person, or if the bug has the disease in it already and gives it to whoever it bites. Or do just some of those bugs have the disease in it?

The article wasn’t very clear, to me.

The article is a little misleading;

People are getting scared they have to stop kissing other PEOPLE —wrong.

The vector bug (which resembles a very small, slender beetle) has some complex Latin name but is usually called, “the KISSING bug” cuz it usually emerges at night and bites the face of a person asleep.

After sucking some blood, it often POOPS, and later the human victim RUBS the ouchy wound, thereby rubbing the infected poop INTO the wound, sealing their fate.

Not near these bugs? You’re safe, kiss the people u want to.
