i know immigration history enough.

we did not federally fund europeans coming over here. they had to have money, and jobs lined up, and a place to live with contact info to check up on, AND be healthy. we didn’t let very sick/contagious ones in, they were not let in sick. and regardless the limits let in were far, far less per year than anything flooding the country now. hundreds of thousands a year compared to millions now.

now it seems we are totally funding them for everything and we’re evil if we don’t believe govt money - aka forced charity (no such thing) should be poured onto these people.

Will a person assimilate and become a productive citizen. Unfortunately, the many illegal immigrants are not encouraged to assimilate and become productive. Example: adoption of English as their language. AND they are still loyal to the countries of origin. Example: the Reconquista movement.

I don’t know why this is a shock. It has been the case for almost two decades. In 1970 one in 21 was foreign-born; today, it is one in 8 the highest in 90 years; and within a decade it will be one in 7, the highest in our history. In 1970 there were 9.7 million foreign born; today there are almost 45 million foreign-born.

I agree with your numbers but they need a little analysis. Japan, China, and Western Europe are facing a demographic catastrophy and we are not far behind them. We have an aging population and need young immigrants to sustain the system otherwise it will collapse. The problem is our welfare system as Europes attracts many that are not productive and become a drain on the states resources. As such they do not help the demographic problem but make it worse, but there is an answer.

We must encourage the immigration from societies that are willing to assimilate into our nation and adopt our culture as did the English, Irish, Norwegians, Swedes, Danes, Italians, Chinese Spanish, Portuguese etc. We are a nation of immigrants with a common American Dream. New immigrants must not be allowed any social benefits except emergency medical care. When they are full citizens and this must be a lengthy process as in the past, they would receive full benefits as all other citizens. There should be no provisions to educate them in their own language. If they are not willing to integrate into our society we do not need them.

I hope many nations send us their Engineers, Doctors, Tradesmen, Educators,(no lawyers please) and those that perform manual labor. All must be willing to grab the American Dream and live it in English. If we do this we will again be the "Shining City on the Hill" that President Reagan spoke about.

ps English and Spanish is spoken in my home but everyone speaks English as either a first or second language. My wife came here legally, her father paid out of State Tuition when she went to the University of Texas El Paso. She did it the legal way. It took 19 years for her brother to become a citizen because he did it the legal way. He scored 100% on his citizenship test. Neither she nor anyone in her family has taken one penny of welfare.

This is the American Dream I speak of. I welcome those that will come and grab it. Those that will not, I do not welcome.

There’s a good argument for us not taking on additional alien dependents. Our birth rate for American single mothers is now at 40 per cent.

Europe thought their immigrants would do the work the children they didn’t have were (of course) not doing, but what they got was generations of useless eaters with bad attitudes, many with several fertile wives birthing even more sullen deadbeats.

The economy sucks and many of our young people can’t get full time work. Most American kids know that babies are expensive. They wouldn’t consider squatting in an ER, having no intention of paying. It’s easy to be fertile if you expect Uncle Sam to pick up all your bills.

Immigration will do little to change our aging population.

While immigrants often arrive young and have somewhat larger families than natives do, the differences are not large enough to fundamentally alter the nation’s age structure. For example, the average age of an immigrant in 2012 was 43 years, while the average age of a native was 37. Also, in 2011 the Total Fertility Rate (TFR) in the United States without immigrants would have been 1.9 children per woman. With immigrants, it was 2.0 — an increase of one-tenth of a point.

Thus, our fertility would be higher than almost all developed countries (and many developing ones) even without any immigrants at all. In a highly technical but seminal article in Demography in 1992, the leading academic journal in the field, economist Carl Schmertmann explored the impact of immigrants on population aging: “Constant inflows of immigrants, even at relatively young ages, do not necessarily rejuvenate low-fertility populations. In fact, immigration may even contribute to population aging.”

As the Census Bureau concluded in 2000, in the long run, immigration is a “highly inefficient” means for increasing the percentage of the population that is of working age. The newest Census Bureau population projections, released in May of last year, show the same thing. The “high-immigration” projections show that if net immigration totals 67 million by 2060, 57 percent of the U.S. population will be of working age (18 to 64). The “low-immigration” projection (33 million fewer) show 56 percent will be of working age in 2060. Roughly doubling immigration changes the working-age share by about 1 percentage point.

I don't agree with the premise that Japan, China, and Western Europe are facing a demographic catastrophe. An ever increasing population is not the secret to prosperity. Automation and raising the retirement age only slightly can address the problem. We have a surplus of workers yet we continue to import 1.1 million legal permanent immigrants a year and 640,000 guest workers annually.

The problem is our welfare system as Europes attracts many that are not productive and become a drain on the states resources. As such they do not help the demographic problem but make it worse, but there is an answer.

We need far less immigrants annually and we need to shift to a merit based system. There is no correlation to our immigration intake and out job needs.

I don't. We have 21 million Americans unemployed or underemployed. We have a surplus of labor, both skilled and unskilled.
