It isn’t chess, he knows that Obama is weak and not really pro-west, and he is capitalizing on that and the rest of the weak pro-Russia Americans to muffle the pro-American/pro-Western voices.

You are wrong to dismiss Putin as just a gadfly, he will be increasing his threat to the America long after Obama is gone.
