Allies capture Myitkyina
Thursday, August 3, 1944 www.onwar.com
In Burma... A joint Sino-American force captures Myitkyina, in the northeast. Most of the Japanese garrison has successfully withdrawn.
In the Mariana Islands... On Guam, the US 77th Division (part of US 3rd Amphibious Corps) advances on the east side of the island after the Japanese fall back. The Japanese defensive positions on Mount Santa Rosa are shelled by American warships.
On the Western Front... Elements of the US 8th Corps (Middleton), part of US 3rd Army, engage German defenders in Rennes while other elements by-pass the city. To the left, advancing forces of US 1st Army capture Mortain.
On the Eastern Front... Soviet 1st Ukrainian Front seizes crossings over the Vistula River, south of Sandomierz, over 110 miles south of Warsaw.

Today's big map. By the way, the logo in the top left corner "Chef WFSt" stands for "Chef des Wehrmachtführungsstabes im Oberkommando der Wehrmacht," or Chief of the Operations Staff of the Armed Forces High Command. That position was held by Gen. Alfred Jodl. These are his maps, and presumably they were used in Hitler's daily briefings.

Here is the Panzer Group West sector. The eastern part around Caen is still holding, but the British are crumpling back Panzer Group West's left wing:

Here is the 7th Army sector. LXXXIV Corps has re-appeared on the map, but it's not clear what units it controls. XXXXVII looks like it's carrying the brunt of the fighting. If I were the Germans, I would not like the way 7th Army looks like it's being herded into a pocket.

The situation south of 7th Army toward Rennes. Forget Brittany; it sure looks like the Americans are doing an "end run" around the wide open left wing of 7th Army. And that planned deployment of a relatively immobile 700 series coastal defense division isn't going to stop it.
