About 550 Army majors, including some serving in Afghanistan, will soon be told they have to leave the service by next spring as part of a budget-driven downsizing of the service.

Gen. John Campbell, the vice chief of the Army, acknowledged Friday that telling troops in a war zone that they're out of a job is a difficult task

Thanks, Obama -- this is what is driving it -- major defense reductions, while he wants to spend billions on illegal aliens.

No, it’s worse than that.

Shortly before WWII, Stalin gutted the officer corps of the Red Army in order to replace career military men with those more dependable politically. This move cost the Sov’s dearly when the nazis attacked, but to a dictator political reliability is everything.

Obama has been purging our officer corps for some time, working from higher to lower rank. We are now down to major.

Don’t be surprised when the new lgbt, Islamic, illegal army; led by Obama’s hand picked officers, shows no loyalty to their oaths or to the American people.

There are probably enough paper pushing Majors in the Pentagon to cut 550. Instead the cuts are Majors serving in combat commands.

Floggings will continue until the moral improves.

Please to not discount the “paper pushing Majors in the Pentagon” as useless. Virtually everyone of them have served as a lieutenant, captain or major in Iraq and Afghanistan. I know this because I work with them. Is Major Smith in my office, who lost his left leg to an IED on patrol when he was a captain in Afghanistan now just a “useless paper pusher” or is he on a tour that enables him to be with his family and to get continuing care at Walter Reed National Medical Center that will enable the “pentagon” to have benefit of his experience?

What about the now full colonel who did 4 tours in Iraq and Afghanistan? He is working on a history of the war in Iraq.

Yep, if they are being shot at right now, I guess they are useless under your criteria.

And this reduction of force has happened in the past: Revolutionary War, War of 1812; Civil War; Spanish-American War; WWI; WWII; Korea; Vietnam; and the Cold War — When I got my RIF notice because there were NOT going to be any more wars.

Thus the focus, IMO, ought to be at a “president” who despises the military and wants to gut it.

Remove those with the most valuable combat experience to train junior officers and mentor senior NCOs . The riffing is also affecting down to Company levels and senior NCOs

For example, Dear Leader has a brilliant idea: phase out single pilot (Kiowa) and Apache (no new next generation platform)Army Aviation ranks and replace with drones

Put all $ in dog like F 35 which spreads the wealth around to potential big time donors..

Replace very competent officers with ass kissers and politically reliable cadres

I never said they were useless. I will say we waste a lot of money in the pentagon. I prefer to cut non combat positions if we must.

If it were up to me we would have a thousand F-22 Raptors, lots more Abrams and Bradleys, and 2 million ready to go Soldiers, Sailors Airmen and Marines. The money wasted in the pentagon generating mountains of top secret paper nobody will ever read would buy a couple F-22's.

Instead we have a welfare state. And no F-22 fighters. And I do blame Obama and those who voted for him.

Reduction in forces has happened after all major wars, or conflicts America has ever fought. Is it a mistake to take it down so low, YES! Just not for the reasons it is being done now. What we don't need is politicians still fighting the last war with out of date info and policies. These new ROE's are getting our Men and women KIA or maimed for life.

Get out of their way, and let them fight!

And yes your Major Smith is a contributor to his Country still. As is your Colonel, he will tell the real story, not the MSM story of what happened in Iraq and Afghanistan.

My dad served under MacArthur, 5 major battles, including The ROCK, Corregidor, 503rd, (Airborne) he was a T/5, he and a PFC put up the first US Flag on a telegraph pole under sniper fire, both received Bronze Stars for it. If not for a former Officer writing books on it that would not be a known factoid.

We do not learn the truth until such warriors write it.

LOL, best to get them out before they become LTC’s. LTC’s have a tendency of becoming leaders of Nations. Yes, real “Leaders”, they aren’t community organizers, they’re proven leaders, something the Libs and MSM fear the most. Currently there is a LTC running the largest country in the world, and mocking the worlds greatest community organizer. Come 2016 the Libs are preparing to run another one of their wussy candidates to show the world how mushy we have become. Its a shame, with the world in total turmoil, we are reducing defense spending and giving away needed funds to support non citizens who are trying to escape corruption in their own countries by running to ours.

We need our Majors, especially those with combat experience. (Why do we have this early 20th century thinking?) We should use the illegal immigration 6 Billion funds to build mini Brigade size bases along the border. Keep our riffed Majors and troops employed. They can share the bases with the state guard units. Of course, they can also continue their careers in the Guard and Reserve if they are lucky enough to find a slot.

Yours is one of the more inane comments to ever appear on Free Republic. To compare this to the Stalin purges displays a remarkable ignorance of history and the facts in play here.
The Obama “purge” is a myth.

What is going on is a reduction in the size and capability of our Armed Forces, but in particular, the Army. Obama doesn’t like armies, especially our own and he has long wanted to cut it to the bone. This is what he is doing. When the Army get smaller, they need fewer Captains, Majors, etc. on down the ranks. Some of these folks won’t be missed much, they are mediocre performers who have been riding the wave. But, many are fine officers who will fall victim to Obama’s desire to spend more money stuffing the pockets of his voters.

Reductions in the aftermaths of wars has been happening throughout the history of the Army. More recently it happening three times after Vietnam, after Gulf War I, and now yet again. Nothing new, not a purge. But, every time that we have done it, we have discovered that we cut too deeply and that we had to build back up to get the Army that we needed. Politicians, though, aren’t too bright and this guy tips the scale on that point.

Americas power is being taken from her.

There is a growing evil that wants tyrannical authority here, its not just (only) some mindless decent of the nation culturally, the military cannot be allowed to retain its honorable heritage as it has long existed since our beginnings, it is a conscious effort and being orchestrated,

That’s also why the wall has come down and invaders are being allowed to flood in,

These invaders, just to be called citizens will enthusiastically and submissively embrace obamacare and take whatever decree, handout or mark the government orders. Ultimately taking the place of those who only remember when they were free and didn’t have to submit to unconstitutional dictates, so they must now also submit or be pushed aside and left with nothing,

A nation cannot have a thriving middle class and be easily ruled over by tyranny, this evil man in the white house and his handlers all understand this, therefore the middle class must be diminished,

I’m sorry that my comment offends you. The notion that Obama is purging the military for political purposes has been broached by others on Free Republic, not that it proves the truth of the matter one way or another, (but it DOES demonstrate that my comment was no ‘more inane’ than others pondering similar conclusions.)

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-bloggers/3144230/posts

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3090753/posts

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3087203/posts

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-bloggers/3079402/posts

History does demonstrate that despots and dictators tend to distrust and purge military commanders. It would be ignorance to conclude otherwise. Stalin was one such example, but others may be cited throughout history. Other recent examples include North Korea,

http://www.nknews.org/2013/05/analysis-a-history-of-north-korean-military-purges/

Cuba:

http://www.nytimes.com/1989/06/17/world/cuba-seizes-6-more-officers-amid-signs-of-big-shakeup.html

Iran:

http://www.iranchamber.com/history/islamic_revolution/revolution_and_iran_after1979_3.php

But the easier method is just to google ‘military purge’ along with the name of a country ruled by a dictator, and view the results.

I cannot prove Obama’s intentions. And neither can you. But asserting that the Obama “purge” is a myth does not make it a myth. And opinions with which you disagree are not necessarily invalid. I hope you are correct, and I am wrong. But I think we are watching the fall of the Republic, if it has not already fallen, (how many Romans truly understood what the Principate entailed when Augustus referred to himself as ‘First Citizen’ rather than Emperor?)

So, please, feel free to disagree. But recognize that others on Free Republic have opinions of their own, and the freedom to form and discuss such opinions is intrinsic to the principles for which we are here, on Free Republic.

And it has been refuted by many on those threads, including me on many occasions. It stands as proof that some idiot can start a list of purges that demonstrates for the most part their complete ignorance of how the military works and they will find many who will believe whatever they say.

You of course, can believe anything you want. You might want to visit Info Wars, there are some things there that ought to keep you entertained for quite some time.

What is inane is your comparison with Stalinist purges and now your attempts to link to purges in North Korea, Cuba, and Iran. I happen to personally know officers who were killed in the Iranian purges along with their families. I know a purge when I see one, and none is going on here. Do you know GEN Carter Ham, one of those most often mentioned as a victim of the Obama purge? I do. He did not get purged, or even relieved of his command. He retired, something all of us do who serve military careers and he did so voluntarily despite what many have tried to claim.

Some myths are really myths because they are made up out of whole cloth. This is a prime example.

Though you know Iranian military officers who were killed thirty-five years ago, and though you know General Ham, that does not constitute a valid argument in this matter. Your opinion may be better informed, but you offer no evidence of that information other than your willingness to refer to those who disagree as idiot or inane.

Demonstrate your superior knowledge with arguments and evidence rather than demeaning your opponent and exalting yourself.

The Average Salary of a Private Military Contractor
By Wilhelm Schnotz, eHow Contributor , last updated April 17, 2014

Average Salary with Security Clearance
Because many of the positions needed in Iraq and Afghanistan directly support military or intelligence operations, the need for contractors with valid security clearances is high in the Middle Eastern combat zones, and workers with security clearances may earn the highest salaries in the private sector. The average salary for private contractors is $73,961 as of May 2009, according to Defense News. The average private government contractor with a security clearance earns about $20,000 more each year than a government employee with the same clearance.

General Defense Contractor Salaries
The average advertised annual salary for defense contractors is $64,000 as of January 2011, according to Simply Hired. These jobs represent positions where security clearances are both necessary as well as unneeded. The site also indexes contractor positions outside of combat zones, such as personnel used domestically to help build military infrastructure, such as information technology contract staff and other base support personnel.
