McDaniel moves toward runoff challenge

Mississippi state Sen. Chris McDaniel (R) will file a challenge to the results of his primary battle with Sen. Thad Cochran (R) with the Mississippi Republican Executive Committee on Monday.

McDaniel will unveil the challenge during a Monday afternoon press conference, his campaign confirmed to The Hill, which was announced to reporters last week and teased as an opportunity for McDaniel “to announce a major development regarding the results of the June 24 runoff election.”

Cochran won the fierce primary fight in the runoff, finishing with a 7,667-vote lead when the results were certified, unanimously, by the Mississippi GOP executive committee over a month ago.

McDaniel has yet to concede, however, and he’s accused Cochran’s team of “stealing” the election, in part by courting African American Democrats to head to the polls for the senator in the runoff. He and his supporters have spent the subsequent weeks poring over poll books, looking for irregular votes. They claim they’ve found over 8,300 irregular votes — more than enough, they believe, to challenge the runoff results in court and successfully win a special election re-do of the race.

Until now, however, McDaniel hasn't offered proof for his claims. His campaign says they’ll unveil hard evidence on Monday, adding that the number of irregular votes has gone up.

The challenge filed with the Mississippi GOP executive committee will be the first step toward filing an official legal challenge in court. McDaniel's refusal to concede the race has drawn criticism, even within the conservative movement. Most notably, conservative commentator Ann Coulter said he should give up the fight. And some Mississippi Republicans have expressed concerns that the protracted primary fight could hurt the party.

On the one hand, it’s GO CHRIS GO.

On the other hand, I’m tiring of this “crying wolf” about a “major announcement” every week or so. This is what, the third or fourth “major announcement?” Nothing major has happened yet.

I am interested to see if this one is indeed “major” —

Racist ads and voter fraud haven’t already? Fight to the end.

>> Cochran won the fierce primary fight in the runoff

The GOP-e stole it with illegal votes... allegedly.

The unanimous decision against McDaniel was a shot across his bow by insiders. Ann Coulter’s wrong on this issue. If McDaniel can present a solid case, then we need to proceed with a special election.

My hope is that McDaniel shows 15,000+ illegal votes. That kind of news will rock the MS GOP and they’ll have to act. Will they coalesce around a McDaniel victory and win or will they undermine him? It’s a mafia, so who can tell?

Yes, McDaniel’s fight against corruption, fraud and mendacity in the Republican Party will hurt the party. How does he expect to compete with the Democrats, otherwise?

“......And some Mississippi Republicans have expressed concerns that the protracted primary fight could hurt the party.”

The party.

What about the people the party is supposed to be all about?

When the party is of more value than the people then it’s time to reconsider ones values.

Assuming McDaniel has a case, the GOPe will fight him. Deny, deny, deny.

Coulter has a point, but I'm not sure it's the one she intends to infer. If McDaniel won, fair and square, THAT will cause the GOPe to drop support for the Mississippi Senate candidate in the November election. Either the GOPe gets its way, or it takes its ball and goes home.

Conservative? Her love of RINO's betrays that statement.

One day Ann is a tea partier, the next day she is firmly in the establishment camp. You have to own an air sock to keep up with Annie.

“Irregular votes”..... I assume those are votes casts by people who voted in the Dem Primary AND in the GOP Run-Off. Am I right?

Ann Coulter a “conservative?” And as far as “hurting the party” is concerned, the GOPe started it.

Am too getting a bit worried this is turning out to be like Glenn Beck’s folly, lots of promotion, little hard fact following.

No doubt the MS GOPe didn’t care if the cheat prone dems helped by cheat vote on their behalf.

No doubt McDaniel’s group is having a steep uphill fight to get evidence, but damn, eventually you have to put up or shut up.

There has always been an end line but it has been moved back by the courts to give them more time to gather evidence. The time has arrived to lay it out, as opposed to doing it piecemeal.

My prediction is that the GOP will not take the Senate. When the forensic is complete, they will trace the roots to Mississippi runoff which resulted in a lack of Tea Party enthusiasm. Also not helping is the Chamber of Commence supporting GOPe then supporting Landrieu in Louisiana.
