Weekend Report: 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Obliterates August Record [$94 million!]

"We Are Groot."

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy ruled the box office this weekend with a fantastic $94 million. That's easily the biggest debut ever for an August release; the previous record holder, The Bourne Ultimatum, opened to $69.3 million in 2007.

Meanwhile, James Brown biopic Get On Up took third place with a modest $14 million debut.

This weekend reversed the box office slump in a big way: the top 12 earned $172.6 million, which is up a whopping 40 percent from the same frame last year. With a packed line-up of major releases coming up, this August is almost certainly going to be the biggest one ever.

Among recent Marvel movies, Guardians of the Galaxy's opening is nearly on par with Captain America: The Winter Soldier's $95 million, and is noticeably higher than Thor: The Dark World's $85.7 million. That's pretty remarkable considering the Guardians were unknown to most moviegoers a year ago, and have few obvious connections to the Avengers at the moment.

Not sure that has anything to do with a sequel. Usually they do, but in this case I think so. I think it was just a nod to George Lucas.

Not for little kids. I loved Rocket, but he was a bit too foul-mouthed for the youngsters.

[ i saw it, too...really liked Rocky raccoon (very dark :). ]

His Name is ROCKET and he doesn’t even know that he is a Raccoon...... Which is ironic...

He apparently was abducted from earth at some point by aliens and experimented upon both biologically and cybernetically and turned into a soldier....

Maybe an alien race needed foot soldiers but wanted to use a “dumb” and “easily replacable” biological entity that could reproduce fast ie. Raccoons... that they could modify and send into combat. Once they figured out how to do the process they could make them via assembly line fasion and they could use the cybernetics to control them. Rocket probably escaped as a “Prototype” and is not a Production model. Probably because he is a clever raccoon and they are good at escaping.

I loved Rocket’s sense of dark humor, and his “Parts” list for getting out of prison and later on...

Well he is a Raccoon, even if he himself doesn’t know what a Raccoon is. And they do dig around in the trash.....

Actually the Bird in question is a Marvel property. It was originally a Marvel Comic Book before it was a crappy 80’s movie made by George Lucas..

[ If you go, make sure to sit through the credits to see the VERY cute vignette placed at the end. It sets things up for a potentially great sequel. ]

I’ll make sure I torrent it in a few weeks to see if I’m glad I didn’t pay to see it.

If I remember correctly, he was made as a companion for geriatric and disabled people. The enhancements were meant to allow him to discuss things and tend to their needs. Apparently the beings who made him didn’t realize how cranky raccoons are.

You mean like, “Did you prick your finger?”

and

“Dick, is that you?”

I wish ticket counts were used instead of dollars. How else can you compare Malificient, for instance to The Wizard of Oz, or The Avengers to GWTW?

Well, I could have done with out the nod....I have had that crappy song from the original movie running through my head since Saturday night.

It was funny for about 5 minutes and now I wish I had not stayed through the credits!
