Russia certainly was going to help themselves, to Hokkaido and probably half of Tokyo.
Well, actually the Japanese murdered Chinese civilians by the millions as well. One horrific crime doesn’t excuse the other.

The differences will be as stark as the way war was waged then, and the way we started to "fight" about 25 years ago.
I'll bet the POW treatment is barely touched upon.
Reflecting on all the crap Israel is taking for defending its civilians from rocket attack, murder raids and kidnapping, we simply could not have fought and won WWII under these conditions. We would have impossible rules of engagement like in Afghanistan and endless wailing about German civilians killed in the bombing. Couldn’t be done.
We did and now there are almost no Japanese who had anything to do with the war crimes. The younger people were only told the one side - America nuked us. The Shinto culture that lead to the cruelty is weak but not entirely gone. As a result, a lot of Japanese feel blindsided by this.
