The empirical evidence of an airborne Ebola Strain is overwhelming
Hat Tip GWP - Patrick Sawyer was the American businessman, who contracted Ebola while working in Liberia, then collapsed after he got off a plane to Nigeria and died July 25. He was the first patient in Nigeria with the Ebola virus. The Nigerian authorities have refused to release the names of other passengers on the plane with Mr. Sawyer, or notify the media of their status.

Sequencing is really the only definitive way to identify a virus. I’m fairly certain that the viruses grouped as Reston are genetically very similar to each other. I admit, I have not read the genetic data on Reston. Seeing that the current outbreak is Zaire, I have read more about the genetics of that specific strain, and any knowledge I have of Reston is within the context of the current outbreak.
A sneeze causes droplet emissions consisting of saliva and mucous. Ebola does spread by droplets of bodily fluid. However, sneezing is not a symptom of Ebola. Furthermore, I read one paper that found that 8 out of 9 patients tested did not have active virus in the saliva (they had virus, but it was not infectious).
For comparison, measles is transmissible by airborne particles, which are smaller than droplets and can remain in the air for hours. People with measles cough. Coughing is not a symptom of Ebola.
Thanks. I had already seen that blog article.
I am familiar with BSL-4 labs. I won’t work in one... realizing that I would rather die of Ebola than wear a spacesuit is enough to keep me in the BSL-2 labs.
BTW, I like the way you spelled your name with codons in your tagline. No, I don’t have the codon table memorized. I used the ExPASy translation tool.
I used to read Michael Crichton and a lot of other science fiction. Then I went to graduate school, where I learned enough to understand just how much the "science" described in most science fiction falls into the "fiction" category. Michael Crichton was a physician, so understood the science far better than most SF writers. These days, I read more fantasy than anything else in the fiction category. That is, when I have time to read for fun at all, which hardly ever happens.
Yeah...true that..
I once was a voracious reader...I have the time, but I just don’t do as much of it.
However I do like the audio stuff. If you like science fantasy as I do. There is this....
You abviously do not understand Vitamin C, (ex - really?) Dem. When you do, your comments will not be as they are now, unless you are in the ‘pay’ of Big Pharma’.
Yes, according to what I have read they are very much alike.
In point of fact, they had a hard time differentiating them. But that was then and this is now...the science is a lot better with better instruments and tools. I don’t know about the virus configuration or it’s containment shell or whatever they call it. I pretty much assumed it had exchanged RNA with some other virus or could have been anything that was resident in the Zero monkey and then it jumped to the others as Reston.
That’s just my assumption.
The big clue staring them in the face was that they knew they had infected humans and they were not getting sick.
But, I have not gone as far as to look at the data or any of the descriptions of strain. It was not easy to find much on it..
Something tells me that they may have restricted some of the information, except for a general overview. This being something that is quite common since 9/11.
I did see pictures of the Reston facility however. Those said a lot. The place looked like a illegal puppy mill in a broken down mobile home. There was feces everywhere...walls, floors..ceiling. The AC system had been broken down prior to the shipment arriving and they thought initially they were dying from poor care.
I’m not big on V-C either....Do you know how many decades that idea has been batted around, and never really got anywhere medically or scientifically?
I don’t think it’s Pharma in the way. They are quite willing to blend anything with anything and sell it as a new drug. They do it all the time. looking at the stock in one of them now that compounds ibuprophen with another generic OTC stomach drug and is selling it at a discount at about 10 dollars a pill. I calculated at retail about 25 cents worth of input costs.
Pharma is not in your way...You can buy all the vitamin c you can carry for cheap.
The problem is that it has been used for decades with only anecdotal results, and kidneys are a big concern these days. Especially mine..
It is possible that Ebola sequences are not found in GenBank. I do not know, and I do not wish to look now.
What this paper tells me is that there is high similarity between the Reston clades, as well as between Sudan clades, Zaire clades, etc.
Thanks...that’s a keeper....
According to the forward on that article, they traced the evolution back 10,000 years.
That’s a very slow mover...
And they do attribute the bats as being the reservoir. Something I had only guessed at based on the Chronology of the Reston story...It seemd that the monkeys may have entered a cave for salt, later, after the event a human contracted Ebola from the same cave that they had traced monkeys to.
The stuff could live for a extended time in guano. As long as it had moisture. A pile of it on a cave floor would be a ideal nutrient petri dish. For generations of bats.
Really? When I purge my brain of all that knowledge I stuffed in there during the course of earning a PhD and in the years working as a scientist since, is that when I will finally "understand" Vitamin C? And, somehow, understanding how the body functions at the most basic levels, makes one a liberal?
Cut the asinine comments about being in the "pay" of Big Pharma. That's really old--adherents of pseudoscience and woo have been making the same idiotic accusations for several decades now. Of course we are "in someone's pocket"--we don't work for free, you know. And the notion that if someone works for someone else and gets paid for their work, there must be some conspiracy is actually a typical liberal idiocy, not at all original.
You are, of course, absolutely free to load up your body with extreme overdoses of Vitamin C until you experience catastrophic kidney failure. And if you get sick with some horrid virus, you are free to eat Vitamin C pills by the fistful. As long as you keep your C overdoses to yourself, I really don't care.
As far as I know, the evidence on bats is purely circumstantial. True, they are nasty and are known to carry many horrid diseases—but I do not think that they have been definitely established as the reservoir for Ebola.
It’s frustrating, to still know so little about the disease despite more than 30 years of study.
lol....
I was thinking...(something I should be doing less of) that Michael Crichton may have had something to do with the advent of this vitamin C business.
In Andromeda Strain, if you recall, the key to killing the virus was blood acidosis. The old guy was drinking Sterno.
Today it’s vitamin C...
Perhaps when you succumb to a catastrophic virus and you forgo any treatment with Vitamin C in your last breath you will acknowledge that Vitamin C might have saved your life.
PhD not withstanding, you are ignorant of the benefits of Vitamin C. Or are you are obviously much smarter re C than Dr Cathcart or Dr Levy?
I think not.
You can make your blood acidic by holding your breath, since the build-up of CO2 (actually, HCO3) in your blood will lower the pH. You don’t need to drink Sterno (unless you really want to).
You now know everything you need to save yourself, in case the Andromeda virus shows up.
;)
Yeah, that’s true....much yet to learn about Ebola and it’s cousins.
Plus there is a new one I was not aware of...”Lloviu” from Spain.
I was a Boy Scout once.....
Now there was a visionary, a man ahead of his time.
Yes, I recall reading about that one. There is no evidence on whether it is pathogenic to humans. However, it was found in bats, which most people tend to avoid.
