With immigration reform, President Obama takes cue from Lincoln
The Wasington Post ^ | 7 Aug 2014 | Charles Lane

Posted on 08/07/2014 7:25:07 AM PDT by mandaladon

Not since Abraham Lincoln pondered his Emancipation Proclamation in 1862 has a president considered ordering a more sweeping adjustment to membership in the American community than the mass relief for illegal immigrants that President Obama is said to be contemplating.

There is obviously no analogy between slavery and the disadvantages the undocumented face today. Among many other differences, the undocumented arrived voluntarily, searching, often successfully, for a better life. Also, they established residence unlawfully, for which there must be some reckoning.

Still, the essentially permanent presence of some 11 million people whose labor and cultural contributions benefit the United States — yet who must exist on the margins of society — creates dilemmas both practical and moral.

And the issue has this in common with slavery: It’s a long-standing debate over fundamental rights that the nation’s democratic institutions have proven incapable of resolving, leading to increasingly bitter partisan conflict.

The ideological concept behind Obama’s grand slicing of the Gordian knot of immigration, if he attempts it, would be akin to that which drove Lincoln’s action: the president as liberator.

The proposal that’s being bandied about — offering up to 5 million undocumented parents of U.S. citizens and others the same two-year renewable reprieves from deportation plus work permits that Obama already ordered for undocumented residents who arrived as children — wouldn’t cover all illegal immigrants any more than Lincoln’s proclamation freed every slave. (It omitted Union-held territory.)

The Washington Post is pushing analogies to the Emancipation Proclamation as Obama ponders executive action regarding illegal aliens.

Chris Mathews on MSNBC was saying the same thing.

Is this a new liberal talking point, that Obama’s pending actions are just like Lincoln and the Emancipation Proclamation?????

Are those Journo-list liberals still at it, still working behind the scenes to come up with unified talking points to push?????

But that's not gonna stop us from comparing the messiah to Lincoln!

Yes, but the key issue about the EP was that it was only applicable in states that were in active armed rebellion against the Union.

At the moment, there are no states in active armed rebellion against the union. Therefore, the analogy is idiotic, and demonstrates the ignorance and propagandistic bent of the leftist media and the Democrat Party.

If Lincoln faced a situation where African blacks were commissioning their own ships to come to America to become slaves, I don’t think Lincoln would have issued his Emancipation Proclamation.

Obama said Republicans in Congress were never satisfied and mocked that they will want a “higher fence” and then “a moat,” and then “alligators in the moat.”

Charlie sounds as though he still gets a tingle out of his “messiah”. Lincoln my @$$. Lincoln LOVED America. Charlie’s boy, Barry, is taking his “cues” from Marx, Alinsky and Cloward-Piven.

Yes. There is no coincidence that WaPo and MSNBC are pushing the exact same Lincoln metaphor. I expect the White House to use this too. The dirty little secret is the group (possibly aside from legal hispanic immigrants) who will be hurt most by amnesty are blacks.

Yep.

Look for this trial balloon to be floated out.

Something tells me blacks are going to be the one to shoot this down hard.

To compare some illegal alien that is taking jobs from blacks, and are able to obtain loans for businesses while many blacks dont have the credit to slavery? Not to mention all of the welfare that they have to compete for with some person that just walked across the border last week.

These guys are playing with fire on this one.

No mention of the millions of crimes, including murder, by criminal aliens. Or that they are using welfare and educational services mainly thru their US born children--300,00 to 400,000 born each year to illegal alien parents. The only ones who benefit from illegal aliens are the businesses that privatize the profits and socialize the costs.

Chris Mathews made the same analogy as Lane. It must be the new Dem talking point prior to Obama's next amnesty, which will be cloaked as a civil rights issue.

There is the liberal misconception / lie in a nutshell.

11 million (I question the total, it's more like twice that) jobs that could be had by real Americans, paying taxes and rasing their standard of living, instead of being on welfare, EBT, SNAP, WIC, Medicaid, Obamaphones or whatever else there is to be doled out by Uncle Obama..............

The analogy is nonsense. The illegal aliens came here voluntarily and they can leave any time they want.

True that. Obama’s disastrous poll numbers, and especially his bumbling performance yesterday, are a cue to the media that they need to ramp up the spin machine. Panic time indeed.

Mr. Lane, here is your final paycheck. We are replacing you for an illegal alien who will work for less. Bye bye. Of course, that scenario does not happen, which is why pundits can chirp about the “benefits” and “contributions” of illegal aliens - those illegals are not taking THEIR jobs away.

The Emancipation Proclamation was both unconstitutional and freed exactly ZERO slaves as it affected only the slaves in the Confederacy (which he had no control over) and ignored the slaves in Maryland. It was a political statement, that’s all.
