Hawaiians are preparing for a potentially devastating one-two tropical cyclone punch, starting with Hurricane Iselle, which in a rarity for the state could make direct landfall Thursday evening.

Iselle, on track to pass over the Big Island of Hawaii as a Category 1 hurricane with winds of 80 mph, could bring up to 12 inches of rain, life-threatening storm surges, flash floods and mudslides, forecasters say.

Be sure to look down by the school yard.

Clicked on this thread expecting to see that, I was not disappointed.

The problem with Hawaii is poor home construction. Storms that would not damage a house in the mainland will severely damage homes in Hawaii. If it hits the island, there will be a lot of homeless if the winds go past 70 mph

We’re about 800 feet elevation so not worried about storm surge. We are in the middle of a rainforest though with monster trees all around and large plate glass windows. My biggest concern is a giant tree falling on our house or a missile through the front window.

from NWS:

Heavy rainfall of around 5 to 8 inches is expected with isolated rainfall totals of 12 inches. These heavy rains could lead to life threatening flash floods.

When Iwa and Iniki hit, we were told to tape up our windows, and leave them open a little to allow the pressure gradient to equalize between inside and outside. Are people doing that in the Big Island?

We were looking at a house up high on Hualalei in the forest and wondering if the trees would create a windbreak in a hurricane or create more of a hazard. Mebbe fifty-fifty?

It is true.

The data shows a 3.9 and 4.5 tremor at the same location near Hawaii.
