For three years, President Obama has declared himself the man who closed the door on a dark decade of U.S. war in Iraq. Now he has opened the door again.
Other than insisting no U.S. combat troops will return to Iraq, Obama’s advisors outlined few clear limits and no definitive end to America’s latest military mission, which began Friday with airstrikes against Sunni militants and drops of humanitarian aid. Given Obama’s stated reluctance to use military force in Syria and other hot spots, the White House faced pressure to explain why Iraq was different, what airstrikes would achieve and whether Obama was launching a new phase of an old war.
“I see this as a watershed event,” said retired Army Lt. Gen. David W. Barno, the top commander in Afghanistan from 2003 to 2005. “Now that we are using lethal force in Iraq, that’s a huge bridge to cross, and it’s very difficult to get back across once you are over it.” …

There was no “quagmire” when he exited. And there would be no quagmire now but for one of the worst foreign policy blunders in history in failing to negotiate a status of forces agreement at the time of the draw down - I remember this being discussed back at the time this could cause problems later - and those predictions turned out to be correct. None of this had to happen, and none of this would be happening now but for Obama’s policies. If action had been taken at the time this FIRST started, before all of these cities were seized, along with U.S. weapons, ISIS would not be in the position they are in now.
And it could be repelled partially if the Obama administration would stop blocking the sale of ammunition to the Kurds who are trying to keep their own territory from being taken over.
DECLARE WAR ON ISIS ! ( and Hamas)

The Times seems to be confused about the difference between declaring you’re the one who closed the door, and actually closing the door. Actually closing the door would have required something like another decade of patching together a government there.

He aggressively pursues military drawdowns in active duty forces to below WWII levels and is rapidly handing out pink slips to the ones we urgently need to defend freedom. He pushed for Sequester and for all the screaming about not having that money to divert, he allows our strength to diminish. He is a joke with Russia, with Mexico, with Israel, with Islamic radicals everywhere, with China, with Central and South America, with Europe, everywhere the U.S. needs strength.
He will toss a few bombs, drop a few MRE’s, pull back and say ‘see, I did something’ and pack up and head to Martha’s Vineyard. Our country is at peril.
