Poland has asked the United States to open its market quickly to Polish apples banned by Russia in a sanctions war over the crisis in Ukraine.
Poland's ambassador to Washington, Ryszard Schnepf, said he had met Michael Scuse, a senior official in the US Department of Agriculture, about the steps needed to open up the US market, the Polish press agency PAP reported.
"We are interested in a quick decision because the situation is extraordinary," Schnepf was quoted as saying.
"He told us to begin the procedure. We have a new meeting planned for August 18 with the heads of the agency that allows for the entry of agriculture products to the United States," he said.
"There is a greater understanding on account of the fact that the United States has also been hit by Russian sanctions," he added.
The United States severely restricts imports of fresh fruit and vegetables from the European Union, including EU member Poland, PAP said.

About 3 years ago, I bought garlic — 3 in a box. There was the name of a company in PA on the box. It was not until I got it home that I saw that it had actually been grown in China! Aack!
We've imported from South America since our beginnings. Mexico is the one that I won't buy.
I just bought fresh garlic, shucked it and put it in olive oil. No Chinese garlic for me.
Are apples from Poland required to meet the same health standards as those grown by American growers?
I would assume that the apples from Poland meet EU guidelines but not sure how much those guidelines differ from American ones. I do know that American apples were banned from EU markets in 2012 after the EU lowered the acceptable level of a chemical used to prevent brown spots during storage.
Actually - 90 % of our apple juice comes as concentrate from China. It’s been found to have rotten apples and arsenic in it.
When you go to the store to buy apple juice. Call the 800 number on the label of the container. I did. Not one of the brands was grown in US or Canada.
Don’t assume that the “Chinese” apples grew there. Lots of things that come from China start out right here.
The melamine contaminated wheat gluten that was killing dogs a few years ago is an example. The wheat was grown here and shipped to China for processing before being shipped to Canada and put into dog food.
I can’t imagine shipping apples from Washington or New York State to China. They’d need refrigeration, the apples would get bruised, and it would cost a lot. But you’re right. The apples could have been grown anywhere.
China is the top producer but we’re number 2 with it being a long way to 3rd place.
I just planted an apple tree this year. It is only 5 feet tall so it might be a couple years.
I had apple wine before. There is this cider mill near groton, that sells both cider and apple wine. It is really good.
1 tree gives a whole truck load. That is impressive. The summer here in New England has been very cool. At least I think so. I haven’t even installed my window units.
