What strikes me odd about this is that the flight was LEAVING the US. Why was the border patrol involved in the first place. I know you have to report the transportation of $10K or more while coming INTO the US.

Are there now currency controls that prohibit the transportation of money OUT of the US?

When Faren reportedly told officers she had no more cash on her, they conducted a pat-down search, and “detected a bulge near [Faren’s] buttocks . . .

Maybe she needs to get to the gym a little more . . . .

Seriously, if this is what it appears to be -- an old woman hiding her life savings to take it to the Philippines and making a wrong decision to not report it all -- then its incredibly unfair for the US government to confiscate and keep it.

Turn your cash into bling and wear it out of the country.

Do you like my diamond tiara officer?

I don’t blame *anyone* for trying to get their valuable things out of Detroit.

What happens in customs when you have $40,000 and do declare it? Does it just go into the database or are you subject to endless harassment about it at the airport?

"seized as currency forfeitable to the United States."

I'm still chewing on the sentence, and it doesn't taste good at all.

Maybe the dough should have been in the form of 1 troy oz American gold eagles, 30 toz to be exact. And with face value $50 each, the stash would not be reportable.

It’s no one’s business how much cash I am carrying.

Why not ask how much a prepaid debit card has on it or what the credit limit is on your credit cards as well?
